Want a RTT but concerned about roof loads. Warranted concern?

I had the same thoughts you had when I first bought my RTT. I have an Inti roof rack that fortunately is extremely light (~30-35 pounds) and the tent weighs around 60 pounds. When loaded, including three gas cans on the roof in front of the tent, I didn't notice any decrease in handling...

    Overland Bike Rack Options?

I've been having the same question. I'm torn between a spare tire, a roof rack or a hitch mounted bike rack. My bike doesn't easily adapt to hanging style racks because of its frame layout. However, I don't think a platform style hitch rack is suitable because of the departure angle...

Realistically...how often do you use your hi-lift?

I have had my HiLift jack for something like 5-6 years. Within that time period, I've only ever used it twice. And both these times, it has been the only recovery tool that has been effective. Both these times the truck was stuck for over 3 hours with winches, straps and whatever being useless...

1st Gen Hilux 3RZ build thread - Stoffregen Motorsports

This build is absolutely awesome and i'm only gonna ask this question to nitpick a little bit Isn't the instrument panel a little obstructed by the casing you built? It looks a little on the small side and might interrupt the view of a tall driver, for example? (I don't know if that's the case)

    Ruffwear Webmaster Harness

I have the model with the two side saddles for my Flat Coat and it rocks! I use it when hiking for him to carry the waste bags, leashes for two dogs, a collapsible bowl and sometimes a little dog food. Everything else I carry on my back. I've been looking to buy the model the OP posted for...

Handbrake problem, we want your opinion!

Well that goes without saying, the cable probably was worn out. Big fan of your Hilux build, by the way! Cheers, Luis

Handbrake problem, we want your opinion!

I have seen cables snapping when left too tight and the handbrake is pulled too high. Twice, in fact. These things do break

Handbrake problem, we want your opinion!

First off, you can easily drive off with the handbrake fully tightened. Second, is your Prado equipped with rear disc brakes or rear drums? I would assume disc brakes, so the handbrake is a drum within the rear rotors. If your cable broke, that would be the only damage you took. Maybe they...

    what's a d4d?

I can vouch for the dependability, capability and fun of the SWB Prados. I own 2 SWB 90 series cruisers exactly like his. I also owned one LWB one before these. I wouldnt worry about being tall, I'm 6'1" and fit in the 90 without any trouble If I could get my hands on a SWB, manual, diesel...

Just purchased a baofeng, do I really need a license?

I was on a similar boat as the OP about a year ago. I was sick of CB's unacceptably poor quality, and FRS/MURS wasnt gonna cut it. My trail buddies and I decided we would switch to VHF for added range and better communication quality. I always said I would get my license, but I still havent...

Where did you mount your 2M Antenna?

The thing is, driving every day I have a roof rack installed. When on trips I have either jerry cans, a tent, a fishing boat, kayaks, or whatever load on the roof. This doesn;t allow me to use the roof. So even if I wanted to use it, the roof is wouldnt be an option anyway. While not in use...

Where did you mount your 2M Antenna?

Hey guys, I've been revisiting my HAM installation. So far it has worked flawlessly, I have no complaints with the equipment but, even though I would be at risk messing with something that works, I have been looking at doing a cleaner install. At the moment my radio is mounted in the shifter...

    Flashlight flavor of the month

Its funny how that "flashlight flavor of the month" sentence screams Candlepowerforum membership For some reason, flashlights are one of the things where I can't bring myself to buy cheap equipment. I own a couple Surefire lights, Petzl headlamps and I believe Maglite LED 3D's are the cheapest...

Camp lighting? 12v or mains via inverter?

I have three sources for camp lighting: 1) The cruiser's lights. I have two Rigid dually diffused lights I use as backup lights, these can illuminate a camp very well, they have an awesome flood pattern and are damn bright. The downside is they aren't always positioned for the task. I have...

    Locking shifters together...anti theft precaution

A friend of mine had a similar setup in his 60. He locked the gearbox in reverse and the transfer in L4. His setup was not nearly as clean as this one, but it worked perfectly. Here in Venezuela, locking shifters or pedals is as regular as a vehicle alarm system. For carbureted vehicles, which...

Tips on Using My ARB Fridge: Heading to Baja for 3 week surf trip

Sadly I don't own one.. yet.. But all the people I know who have one and will use it for an extended trip (say 5+ days total) keep it on at full blast for a whole week before the trip so it ends up completely lined with ice, they keep the frozen food solid and the refrigerated food cool prior...

Saw this FJ plow through a car in Fairfax, VA (He had an ARB front Bumper)

You know, living in NYC for a few months had me wondering why everyone had these plastic or foam bumper protectors when parking. I never had anyone bump my car when parked. Or did they? Meh, if they did its their problem, I never noticed:sombrero: On a more serious note, we do have a sort of...

Mounting your awning to your roof rack.

I used a sort of S bent steel angle that allows the awnings to be mounted below the flat rack surface so that it doesn't affect the height of the vehicle and it doesnt interfere with awkward shaped or oversized loads if it were the case. I will take pics today and post later
