    Mercedes Vario Second Alternator

Hi Anthony The rule of thumb on charging battery's is 10% in or 10% out per hour, more than this can reduce the life of battery's significantly due to the heat generated. I would suggest you reconsider such a large second alternator and size it more to suit your battery pack assuming of course...

Mercedes 609d lots of body roll!

Hi Rob With it standing so long I would suggest you change the rear shocks to begin with, also look at the rubbers on the spring hangers as these will also probable have perished too.

    mercedes 614 brake disc replacement

The main problem with the Vario front disc is that they crack radially, this causes the flaking that you have seen. The cracks are caused by the heat build up during braking and then splashing them with cold water either by heavy rain or jet wash. I know it sounds unlikely but from experience...

I forgot to say that the drag link are prone to wear and again should be checked regularly, I have known vehicles to be fitted with a new genuine Mercedes part and still fail next day on the MOT. If you change it, keep the old one and carry it as a spare because they can snap when off road

Ian Its really hard to read how the vehicle performance has turned out after all the work you have put in, but as always it about engineering problems out I guess. You are familiar with the 814DA I converted. 2.5t on the front, 5.3t on the rear, length 8m, height 3.7m and ran on standard wheels...

I had a similar problem with the trim and used the flexible Sikaflex 512 to cure it. If you can get it in the crack it would be better, but if not on the top will do. I used masking tape to get a thin bead on the visible part only 3 mm wide and has stayed on. Down side is it only comes in white...

Pre birth of a camper - No laughing!

I bought an ISRI chair from a Mercedes Breaker in Bradford, with ours being left hand drive the seats he had worked well as they came out of UK vehicles being converted. Un-used chairs were £120 for cash and he had a truck body full of them, all in as new condition. If your interested I will try...

Ian Like many others we have had times whilst wild camping when things are going on outside that you cannot see and stepping out into the dark is not always the best option, making the decision whether to drive off or not a difficult one. I have often thought that had I built in a master 'panic...

Docka, on ours the box is bolted and glued with Sika to a skeleton frame made from 50mm box and 100mm x 50mm box (along the length of the chassis) as per picture below. The frame is then mounted to the chassis with standard body mounting springs with extended bolts allowing, during chassis...

This indeed did happen, the black tank split against reassurances that it could not. Unfortunately, even though I did have access to the tank I could not get it to re-seal. It split very slightly on a seam. I tried all types of adhesives but in the finished decided to take it out and replace it...

Thank you for your kind words, it has been a hard decision to sell our bus. With Ian's kind help we have now been able to put back up our website, it is not as posh as originally but does give those interested an insight as to how the vehicle was converted. Ian, thank you again for your help...

Re the polypropylene tank patch, unfortunatly I do not believe you will find an adhesive that will stick long term. I had a polypropylene black tank that split along the seam and I tried all types of 'glues' that 'would' do the job, but none did. The nearest I found was a two pack adhesive used...

    Nice Vario 814 4x4

Diff vents are just above the wheel hieght attached to the chassis rail so this is about the safe limit for wading, but the book says about 1/2 metre from memory . Also if you get stuck in the water do not apply the hand brake if its air assisted as they draw air in. This unit has the older type...

Pre birth of a camper - No laughing!

Hi Ian, body looks good. I also had difficulty with the step into the cabin. My first attempt was to use folding steps that slid into a slot under the body. For the prototype I cut down a domestic set of steps, but it was not long before I realised this system was not going to work. See below...
