Yes, you can. I use a deep cycle car/boat battery in my set up. Its a pretty sweet set up and you don't have to worry about anything. Its switches between charging the start to full and then it will start charging the house battery. Then when you turn the key to off it separates the batteries...

I really like my 45 even more so after I tried it out. I was really close to buying a Yeti, my local sporting goods store had a $50 gift certificate with purchase but they were out of tan. I would swear both the Yeti and RTIC and made in the same factory.

Results Loaded it with 2 bags on Friday afternoon and it sat in my heated camper (~68 degrees) drove 350 miles on and off-road till Monday afternoon when I took this picture. I also drained the water after I took this picture and set it on the floor of my (non heated now)camper with the lid...

When you get to WA try to plan some sort of route over Hwy 20. There is a stretch of highway for 86 miles where you don't see a house, store, etc.. They close it in the winter around November or so depending on the snow. Awesome trip report, fun to follow. Safe travels
