Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

Aaaand AEV wheels are no more. Method MR305 NV HDs and 295/70R18 Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs are taking their place. Got em for a steal through Discount Tire Direct using their price match. I'll hang onto the OEMs in case I find myself living in a place where studded winter tires are warranted...

Ram and Ford HD owners.....enter here.

Underside of the bed up at the front, on both the driver and passenger side, are these large, empty cavities begging for a compressor and tank. Some time in the next few months I'll be fabricating a mount to get an ARB twin and tank in here.

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

Pretty sure I've sworn off MTs at this point. While they may offer the best traction off road, I can't stand the noise and poor performance in the rain/snow on road. I think I'd rather have to bust out the winch or maxtrax more often as opposed to try and unwrap myself from around a telephone...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

You know what, you are right. I've been having heartburn over the decision since I clicked order, but I think I've come back to 18" tires. While I'm not sure I'll ever get close to 7K on the rear axle, or even the 6,400 afforded by the 17s, its probably best to have the capacity and not need it...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Hard to argue with this. It has very real pluses and minuses. If I were buying a vehicle solely for overland travel, it would be a gas for sure. If I were buying an HD truck again, it might very well be a gas engine too. Of course, for most of us, we use our trucks for other activities far more...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

At least in my area, the diesel premium was negligible. I got my CTD for the same price as the 6.4s were going for. Maybe I'm just a master negotiator.

No personal experience with that size, but googling, and the fact that my wider and larger diameter 295/70R18 fit and just kiss the sway bar and radius arm, lead me to believe that the 285/75R17 should fit without rubbing on OEM rims. In reality the 285s are only .5" larger in diameter and width...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

Fine fine, you guys win. Just ordered some 285/75R17 Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT tires and a set of flat black AEV Salta rims. Won't be installing them any time soon, but they'll be waiting for me when I get back. Should be adequately tall and skinny enough to avoid trimming and rubbing. I was a...

Great White: A Chevy K10 Build

For the backup lights, you could also mount a single row bar or pod between the two rails on the rear bumper. You might experience some light cutoff up high with the Jerry can holder on there, but otherwise it may be cleaner than trying to put a bar on the swingout.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

In my experience, with the exception of a few states thus far, diesel fuel has either been the cheapest or within a few cents of the cheapest grade of gasoline. Just looked while driving today and the local stations have both diesel and the lowest octane gas for $3.54/gal. Reaaaallly, for some...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Man, you guys must go camping in some cold ass weather. Coldest I've ever experienced in my years living in New England and Colorado was -20*F below. Fuel has never gelled on me, but then again it wouldn't be as big of a deal as I'm sitting in front of a toasty fire and not out in life...

    Solenoid Air Control Valve

I'm curious to see what you come up with. I've been seeking a similar setup, but came to the conclusion that by the time I pieced something together, I'd just be better off buying an Air Lift wireless manifold.

Since you guys are my go to for such information, I'm hoping to poll the audience on the largest tire size I can stuff on this truck with no rubbing or trimming, using a 17" AEV wheels. I desire big meats, but I also have no desire to trim the pinch weld or cut any fender plastic. Was targeting...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

The diesel heaters work wonders for keeping the cab nice and toasty, all while sipping fuel. Buddy of mine has his set up to draw from the vehicle fuel tank, and even at -20*F outside his van is comfortable inside. As an added bonus, he doesn't have to clear the snow off of his vehicle either.

Clifford, the big red truck. 8.1l 2500HD with M101 bed.

I had to space my camper up a bit as well, I wager you'll want a good 2" or so of clearance between the cab over and the roof to account for the camper wiggling around. On mine, I ripped some dimensional lumber to the desired height, screwed it to the camper bottom around the perimeter, placed...

Things are looking good since I last checked in here! The wife and I are, regrettably, moving back to the Boston area at the end of this summer. I'll definitely have to speak with you about where to go and explore. Having boundless amounts of BLM and National Forest here in the West has...

And now we are, more or less, caught up to the present. There probably won't be any more mods done to the truck any time soon, unless some generous sponsor decides to parachute fun parts down to me ala Hunger games. For those who would like to check the truck and camper out in person, my wife...

One of the most important choices to make when outfitting the truck for our adventure was tires. Practically speaking, they are the only link between your vehicle and the pavement, so choosing an appropriate tire for the expected conditions is paramount to safety and reliability. In our case...
