Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

We all know them, Bushwacker pocket fender flares. They appear on everything from hardcore offroad rigs, to show queens, to absurd trucks with 48" of lift and low profile mud tires on high offset chrome rims. They are, in the RAM world, a cheaper and simpler option for those of us looking for...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

There is no way around it, RAM blew it when designed the drag link for their HD trucks. Mine currently resides in a dumpster somewhere in CA, but basically it was two halves connected in the middle by a threaded collar and jam nuts. This allowed the length to be easily adjusted and the jam nuts...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

According to the RAM service manual, differential fluid should be changed every 15K miles for "severe" service. Given that I'm operating near payload, and use 4wd with some frequency, I figured I fall under that category. There are two schools of thought on aftermarket diff covers, some think...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

I'll be honest, the headlights on the RAM aren't the best. As in, 2.5/10 kind of performance, most of that owing to the fact that they do indeed throw light. I'm not sure if the projector versions are any better, as they come from the factory, the headlights leave a lot to be desired. During...

Lady Godiva: 2017 Ram 3500 CCLB Build

Been a long, long time since I updated this thread with any real content, so I believe it's time to do something about that. We've now been on the road since July of 2018 and have covered most of the US and Western Canada, so all of the mods on the truck have been tested on and off-road through...

    2015 Ram 2500 Carli/Thuren Build W/Four Wheel Camper

Just FYI, although the ship has already sailed on this, rather than cutting through the grommet and introducing leak points, the block off plate to the left in your picture is a perfect candidate to drill through and run wires. I intend to put a bulkhead fitting in there when I run the rest of...

    Propane tank under chassis mount

It's a fair gamble. @dreadlocks has clearly had no issue getting tanks filled, and I'd wager you probably wouldn't either. So long as you ensure that any rust is cosmetic and do a decent job painting the tank, chances are nobody will notice or care.

    2015 Ram 2500 Carli/Thuren Build W/Four Wheel Camper

Would you be running all 8 pods to the same switch or breaking them up into groups? Biggest downside I can see to the pod approach is the additional wiring work needed to support 8 accessories vs a single bar.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

The fueling challenges are real for sure. That said, we've traveled through 44 states and 3 provinces so far and always managed to find diesel. I carry a spare 10 gallons in Jerry cans when we dive into more remote areas but have never had to tap into those reserves. It is true that people do...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Another big plus with the diesel, at least for me, is the exhaust brake. Works like a charm both on and off road to help keep things in check.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

True, but the GVWR is not necessarily the same for the diesel and the gas trucks. There are configurations for which both the GVWR and payload are higher for the diesel.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Not necessarily true. Per the RAM literature, at least for the 2017 model year, a lot of the gas models (3500s) have payloads that are equal to or not that much different than the diesels.

    Propane tank under chassis mount

"If a propane tank is uncertified, damaged, has a bent or missing collar or foot ring, excessive rust or has been painted violates national propane gas rules and policies and will not be refilled." https://www.uhaul.com/Propane/Safety/ Now, maybe they mean 'has been painted in a way which...

    Propane tank under chassis mount

YMMV, but Uhaul specifically states that they will not refill repainted tanks. I've run into several other places along our travels with similar caveats, none of which differentiated between DOT and ASME tanks.

    Propane tank under chassis mount

Careful with painting it, some places consider painting a tank to be tampering with it and will refuse to fill it.

Is this to run a propane heater, a camp stove, or both?

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

First time diesel owner here, and other than the additional up front cost, I love it. The additional maintenance has proven not to be a huge deal, just a few more bucks out of pocket as you said. Otherwise, the positives in my experience have outweighed the negatives. That said, if you dont...

Ram Rebel or Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

I agree with the Tundra > Tacoma sentiment, especially if you'll be towing anything of significance. Your profile pic looks a lot like Colorado, in which case the Tacoma will struggle mightily hauling 4K up and down the mountain passes. I hauled a 3,XXX lbs travel trailer around CO with my 2nd...

Ram 2500 XL for overland / expedition trips

Carli, Thuren, and Artec all offer truss kits for the AAM 9.25". I'd go for the Artec personally, not only is it half the cost of the Carli kit but it stretches from knuckle to knuckle and has support for the C's as well.
