    DIY Firestarters

Since the cotton balls-in-Vaseline has been brought up, I'd like to add my $.02. Yes, the Vaseline-soaked cotton balls work great, but don't catch a spark very well. If you are planning on using a striker or flint, keep some cotton balls without the Vaseline. The dry cotton balls are pretty good...

    Land Roamer – World Tour

Welcome, Bernard, . I'll be following your build with interest. . Your timing is interesting. A few weeks ago a Brimont Commando fire truck popped up on ebay USA, and that is the first most of us had heard of Brimont. Your Brutt is considerably smaller, right? In looking for more information, I...

    Centramatic Dynamic Wheel Balancers

1stDeuce, thanks for the technical explanation. . I'm a high school physics teacher, and got hung up on the terminology. As I'm sure you know, static = non-moving and dynamic = moving (oversimplification). . Ever since the topic of the balancing beads came up on this forum I have wondered...

    Centramatic Dynamic Wheel Balancers

Unless I'm mistaken 'static balance' refers to the old bubble balancers where the tire/wheel combination is balanced without rotating, and 'dynamic balance' refers to the newer machines that spin the tire/wheel combination to evaluate its balance. So, since the beads are distributing...

    Non-Combustion Heater in Camper Shell

IMHO people often overlook the value of an insulated sleeping pad. Don't forget that even with a good bag your body weight compresses the insulation below you, minimizing its effectiveness. If you don't have good insulation between your bag and the bed of the truck you could get cold no matter...

    Technical Overshoes?

Back when I worked in a Colorado mountain town (Woodland Park) I had a pair of Neos technical overshoes. It was great to be able to just pull 'em on over my office shoes and go for a hike over lunch... I even used 'em for snowshoeing, just pulling 'em on over my tennis shoes. Anyway, I sold...

Boeing Phantom Badger...Coming to a showroom near you????

Assuming the intended use is an air-transportable, rapid deployment, special-operations vehicle, what non-tactical vehicle would you start with?

    '83 Bedford MT DOKA

Years ago in Colorado I registered a CJ that didn't have a body VIN plate. The officer told me that the frame VIN is the only one they cared about. Body swaps are legal, but registration follows the frame. I've also seen a lot of kit cars registered according to the donor car (frame VIN). I'm...

How do you do your laundry when in far from society places?

In a previous thread on this same topic, I suggested using the 'bucket while driving' method with a drybag rather than a bucket. Seems it would function just as well, but be more packable when not in use. I haven't needed to try either method, though.

    Homemade Air Conditioner

Unless I'm mistaken, antifreeze typically freezes at around -35 deg. F and dry ice boils at -109.3 deg. F. Your system may be susceptible to ice blockages.

    Kitchen Kit/Chuck Box

I think everything is going to rattle around a lot, and better have good lids.

    Homemade Air Conditioner

Pretty cool, but you'd have to be camping near an ice source. Can't imagine one load of ice would cool a tent overnight here in Texas. Tempted to try it, though... I've got an old cooler I could drill holes in. My first thought was why bother with the styrofoam bucket, since the intention of...

    TerraLiner:12 m Globally Mobile Beach House/Class-A Crossover w 6x6 Hybrid Drivetrain

I thought briefly about two trucks. Specifically for recovery advantages. However, besides more fuel, more shipping expenses, more carnet expenses, more insurance, more... my issue is mostly that our family of four would not enjoy traveling 'together' nearly as much if we were separated into two...

My mess kit is coming together

Great kit. A lot of people like the various plastics, but you might also consider Corelle. I like 'em better because they're easier to clean up after a greasy meal than plastic. Also can be picked up second-hand at thrift stores. The only drawback is that even though they are pretty hard to...

Adventure trailers, kitchens and bear safety

Just a quick thought on the bear spray... I wish I had kept a copy of it, but back when I was on an alpine SAR unit we received copies of a bear spray study (I think it was AK Dept. of Wildlife). They found that while the spray would drive off a bear, it would draw distant bears into the area...
