    HF Mobile in the woods

To clarify, the afore-quoted text is a generic reference to an imagined possible scenario in which Mobile HF would be able to provide capability that Portable HF would not by simultaneously transporting the victim of a back country accident and maintaining contact with distant medical...

Dave assume you are joking... if not I am really struggling to figure out where you are getting flying doctors out of my post.

Ham newbie with mobile radio question

I have the FT-7900. It is a great radio for sure as is the 8800. Frankly I got the 79 because it was the least expensive remote face rig I could find. For the most part any radio is better than none. They all work well and the rest is personal preference and price point. A few other factors to...

    HF Mobile in the woods

Kind of off track here but maybe not... Most of the time Mission Critical is a buddy will be meeting up with us some time today and I need to be able to monitor so we can arrange rendezvous and the area/distance involved precludes solid VHF. On occasion however it could include keeping in...

    HF Mobile in the woods

Thanks Guys. Lots of good ideas. I like the whip with tuner but I got thinking about how much better a longer whip would work. I found this thread where they are talking about military whips. Some of them look very cool with sections that can be added or subtracted to suit the present need...

    HF Mobile in the woods

I just got a new Jeep commander and I am working on putting together a plan for all the antennas I will need. This will be my first vehicle with HF. This is a jeep and while it is a bit of a mall crawler model, I intend to use it like a Jeep should be used. Three kids just don’t fit in the XJ...

    Going Mobile with HAM

I use a safari style rack with my 2m antenna on the front center. It works great as a ground plane. I think your rack would work just fine, though it could be in the way of using the rack maybe. If you are not mounting it through the roof why not use a UHF mount. I think the connection is a bit...

    Smittybuilt Element Ramps

I think Manley trailers is an interesting case in point. He sells both a less costly, made overseas version and a more costly, made in the US version. I wonder what his sales split is between the two? The reason I find this interesting is that in a way he has made the choice to compete with...

Sorting out a RX issue with a VX-7R...

So were you ever able to sort this out and get it working?

Sorting out a RX issue with a VX-7R...

I have never used the VX-7 but I can tell you that if it is looking for a wide signal and the signal in Narrow you will get poor RX performance. If your radio can be set to narrow by channel that is your solution. I doubt anything you can do with the antenna will improve things if this is set...

Anyone want a mounting bracket for a Yaesu ft 7900 head in an XJ?

Thanks for the complement. With the removable face on the 7900 there is just the one cable. I was able to just tuck it in at the top of the windscreen. I did loosen the trim on the A pillar to get it in their nice. The rest of the radio is under the driver seat. There's a little external...

Please help me pick an android phone for verizon

I got a Razor MAXX in Feb. I love the big battery in a thin phone. For my use I never have a problem getting through a day with a charge and that is a big deal with these smart phones. Even on my heaviest use days running a lot of video and such...

    Communication options

Mike I think you're right on about understanding how a variety of systems work. It's all radio. I question the following: Without any personal experience operating in the area I don't know for sure but I imagine there are 'holes' and damned ol' Murphy will be sure you are in one when you find...

    For Mashurst....406mhz PLB's....big Wiki.

Wow I'm out for a few days and I miss the whole thing I find this shocking. For a guy that puts his faith in this thing as the ultimate in reliability you still trust it even without any evidence to support that fact over nearing 5 years? ‘Seldom’ I think, surely means more often than 5 years...

How would you outfit this custom LJ?

Ebay... Hum... No part numbers or manufacturer? I guess I'll have to find some myself. Thanks for the cool idea. I got some drop in replacements LED bulbs for my XJ and I have not been impressed. I want a third break light that gets peoples attention. I hate getting rear ended.

Do you have a source for those lights? Did you just glue them in?

Sparky, Why don't you tell us about yours? How long have you had it? What was your experience getting it registered? When do you test it? What is the Test like? Have you ever had the battery replaced? What was that like? What did it cost? When do you chose not to bring it? Etc... Inquiring minds...

Sparky, I just learned these things existed… what a week ago? I am learning about them. I come to this site to learn about what is out there. What works for people and what does not and that is what I’m doing here. You are the one with the ego that can’t be objective. I have not made up my mind...
