    Radio installation help

Good advise here. I just want to add that maybe you don't need to stress too much about what type of coax to use... RG-58 or 8x. For a short run like in a mobile you really cant go wrong. There is a lot of lingo with coax and connectors that I found confusing at first as well. Just get it to...

Anyone want a mounting bracket for a Yaesu ft 7900 head in an XJ?

Here is the final design... unless I get any ideas over night. ASFOC if you want in let me know and I'll have them quote two. Once I get it done, maybe tonight, I will also post the flat pattern 1:1 so you or anyone could also just use the pattern to make one or use it as a base for something ells.

Anyone want a mounting bracket for a Yaesu ft 7900 head in an XJ?

This should be close to the end product. I will be making a scale model out of card board to test the fit and may make a few tweaks but this is basically it. Front view. Right Side view. The "finished Product" will be the flat cut out so you will need to do the bends yourself. With this...

Anyone want a mounting bracket for a Yaesu ft 7900 head in an XJ?

Here is a "napkin sketch". I don't have any measurements in it yet but it should show the idea.

Anyone want a mounting bracket for a Yaesu ft 7900 head in an XJ?

I am designing a mounting bracket that will affix under the two visor clips to hold the radio head just above the rear view mirror in my 98 Jeep XJ. It will include a built in mic holder slot to the right of and above the head and have holes to attach the clip basket thing from the separation...

    Portable HF antenna

Dave, Thanks for bringing the HFp to my attention. The more I looked at it the more my infatuation grew. They are only in the next town over and long story short I picked one up and have found it fits the bill nicely. I didn't get the 80m coil but I may yet. I find the build quality good but not...

    Portable HF antenna

Thanks for all the input guys. There are a lot of nice options here. The TW is a Cadillac for sure. The fact that to get both 20 and 40 requires two center sections and big price jump is a bummer. Those last two both look great. The Bravo in particular is one I have not seen and it looks like...

I cut off most of my cig stuff and put Anderson power poles on.

    Antenna Extension?

Getting it up on the rack instead of down in it should help it work better.

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

Short answer is for US and Canada yes. There are very few areas so remote as to be out of range of some repeater network. That's not to say there aren't any but you will be adding a good deal of capability to a cell only setup. Adding 6m would help out here in the west too. having been licensed...

    Antenna Extension?

I agree completely with 1911. It should work just fine in theory but in reality keeping a CB setup reliable is always a challenge. I don't like the idea of packing around it thought. That just does not seem like a good solution. I would be looking at a way to turn the existing hole into a pass...

    Portable HF antenna

Thanks for all the input guys The thing tips the scale at something like 16 lbs so I hope I never have to hand carry it very far. This is sage advise I'm sure. A simple dipole is hard to beat for value. Do you have a favorite method of getting your lines up in trees? A launcher of some kind...

    Portable HF antenna

I just picked up a TS-450SAT and I'm looking forward to using it out in the mountains. I need to work on my antenna setup next. I'm thinking something that can be tuned on 10m-80m with the 3to1 tuner in the 450, can be set up in less than maybe 15 min by one person and will have good efficiency...

    Antenna Extension?

How about a picture or two to see what your are talking about? In general the co ax (the wire connecting the radio to the antenna) can have a joint in it and still work but it is better to have a single run all the way. The length of the co ax is not terribly important but shorter is better.

Best grounding to protect the radio

More fuel for the fire. After a bit of reading I'm thinking I need to: 1) add a new ground in the cab near the radio 2) move the wire from the negative post to a new dedicated body ground near the battery to body wires connection to the body 3) remove the negative fuse...

Best grounding to protect the radio

Background for those that may not know: Unlike most 12v things in a vehicle a radio requires particular attention to grounding such as a fuse in the ground line and a solid copper path back to the core of the vehicles charging system. The reason for this is that should the vehicles own ground...

Australian 477MHz CB legal in US?

Those are cool little rigs. If they did one that was not channelized for the US 440 ham band I would think the size would be a hit.

    HAM radio/amateur radio FAQ

Generally any mobile type antenna that is good for 2m and for the max power of the radio will work. If you have a duel band radio you would want a duel band antenna to go with it but if you have a 2m only you could still use a duel band antenna. As far as a recommendation goes, everyone has...
