it was done by ATW (contact John). All done in a day. I tried a couple of Stratos agents in Brisbane (closer to home) but they were a bit iffy about the passenger side and didn't seem to understand wanting to keep the middle seat.
I included arm rests (right hand for left hand seat, left hand...
the truck survived container shipping. Phew. Didn't need to worry after all!
Currently in Laos. Getting a bit lost in the SE! Cross to China on the 18th.
isn't google wonderful ... there's lots of upside down tomatoes but a link to here is the only upside down defender. As Ali said when put the seal on "there's nothing you can do about it now". :coffee: (I don't know what these emoticon things mean but lots of coffee until we open the container...
truck is now on its way to Malaysia. Container pack took about 20 minutes (what was I worried about?). Two people. Reversed in using lo ratio and person behind to direct. FWIW its possible to climb out the cab window once inside. Not enough space to drop down to the floor, had to sidle round...
the mechanical speedo correction units are simply a small gearbox. Standard outer case with gears selected from a very wide selection. Its a matter of ordering a ratio that reflects the difference in tyre diameters from old to new. If its electronic its even easier. I'd "take it back".
thanks P&K. I set off on that trip with a notion of learning more about why the landscape, vegetation and widlife are the way they are. Visions of being an "Ozologist". I've seen erratics (drop-stones) previously and that boulder wasn't difficult to spot (large, a different colour, in a...
thanks all. We'll keep the website updated as we travel - its a simple site to keep uploads easy.
On container shipping cost. We've found that the actual ship cost is small (to Malaysia from Brisbane about US$600). The killer is the port and agent charges, at both ends. Pushes it up to about...
thanks for all the posts in this forum. Most useful.
My build was completed last June after about 6 months hard work. After that 5 months through the center of Aus to test it (and us). Last 3 months has been preparation for SE Asia, China, Mongolia, Russia, Europe etc. interrupted by having to...
Near Shillinghurst Regulator on the Murray a few weeks ago. Ranger had a bit of trouble but reckoned "you'll be ok in that".
Exiting Palm Valley last week. Nice to see the chassis twist without breaking the box (I think)!
Just a thought. I'd suggest testing the glue, it may well be that the screws are unnecessary to hold the Al on. A large area of adhesive should be very strong in shear. If the adhesive lets go its probably not the right stuff.
just completed a build (preparing for trip in next day or so). About 6 months from first weld to usable. Very industrial looking rectangular box (4x2.1x2.1m) made of frameless 22mm (50mm floor and roof) fibreglass structural panel glued with Sikaflex on simple sub-frame. The panels arrived as a...
beat me to it Kerry, I suspect on mine that there's a mismatch between the battery posts and the terminals which means a dodgy connection, the clamps don't quite clamp - yet to get around to sorting out.
good view Riptide. I'm not averse to technological improvements per se. I enjoy. For me its about how the improvements are implemented. Reliability (in Maintenance terms) has Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). I need not just long MTBF but also short MTTR. Looking...
I'm in the process of copying Peter's elegant solution. Using a brake winch - looks like a hand ratchet winch but needs to be wound down as well as up and stays where it is when handle let go.
finally found the ODB connector. My FG649 Canter is right hand drive, connector is visible when windscreen washer reservoir cover (below glove box) is opened.
Unfortunately only one wire connected to ODB connector, I'll track down the pin number later, probably earth. There's another connector...
I can understand the difficulty of adjusting, any change of culture is challenging, but I'm totally convinced that on balance we are better off for having traveled extensively.
I'm biased as I've lived and worked for long periods in 4 countries and travelled in lots from backpacking to first...
previous owner had sealed that big junction box, pristine inside. It was his second Canter and he did quite a few things to not have the same problems he had with the first one. Forgot the tail lights though - took me a couple of hours to find the corroded earth while connecting lights for...
thanks Doug. Having achieved that perhaps an unintended, but IMHO good, side effect is to sometimes look at one's own "normal" in a different light, and potentially from the perspective of those other cultures.
