Another NPS 300 4x4

G'day all......joined expo a few days ago.....very interesting and lots of info. Started designing my camper on a Isuzu NPS 300, 2 1/2 years ago and had it built and took delivery of it in April 2009. Wish I would have known then about this forum as it would have saved me some money as I was mucking around with the suspension and shocks. Anyway I sorted it out after the first trip and reading some of the posts confirmed that I've done the right thing. Have since travelled all over Australia clocking up some 50'000klms. However it's still an ongoing project and the next step is a winch but with attachment points and wiring front and rear. Also I'm in the process of converting to singles. It should be interesting as the next trip planed is to Cape York (thats Australia's northernmost point for you guys in the US)!
Tried to attach some pictures but didn't work......will try some other time.
Happy travels
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Welcome!!

Ditto. Adrian. It's a good forum for the Aussies. Maybe one day there will be a dedicated Aussie forum just for these trucks but I reckon ExPo just has so much else going in the background. Once you start looking at the other sections, like the electrical, planned expeditions, recovery gear, water sport, cooking, etc you'll realize it is so much more and all in one place. It's also really good for picking up info from guys who've done it all. Especially guys that do really cold country, as an example > I've picked up so so much about heating systems from some of the Canadians. There are some very experienced Aussies here that know the central deserts as well as anyone too.

Like Alan, says ...you have to use a photo sharing website like photobucket. I use flickr.....set up an account> upload pics to the sharing site from the photo gallery on your computer then use the "mountain icon" when you are writing up your post and drop the url (or image location) from the pic you want to post. If you attach them , they only stay as thumbnails till they get clicked on but if you use the mountain button ......the pics come up full size straight up.

Just make sure you only post the pics up to 800 wide. When I use flickr, I click on the pics in my photostream and can view them in 4 different sizses. I just click on the 800 x 640 size and get the image location of that. It really easy after the first 1000. Hahaha.

Call out if you need any further help. Very keen to see pics of your truck. BTW I was down at the Goldie on the weekend. Quicksilver was on at Snapper. Lots of people. Man...that Coolangatta has changed since I was down there last.

Again welcome mate.
John.

Thanks for your welcome and advice , Allen, John, Pete and Kel......I will try again later to get some pics up.
And no, its not my truck parked behind the Woodburn Pub, however there are many Outback Pubs we supported and parked behind. (Daly Waters, Blue Heeler, Urandangi spring to my mind) :):)
Catch ya later

Just had the single wheel conversion incl. additional vacuum tank and speedo calibrator done which necessitated a modification to the front guards as the front wheels stick out about an inch. Also altered the spare wheel carrier and made a new aluminium box. Took the camper for a test run up the free way and noticed that the speedo (according to my GPS) is about 10% ahead. It showed 110kph, but the GPS indicated 98kph which seemed about right as the traffic was flowing faster. Has anybody else noticed such a large difference?
Still having troubles bringing up pics but at least there is a link now

Nah...that doesn't sound right....did Gold Coast Isuzu do the conversion ? What's the serial number engraved on the speedo correction unit? Can you please take a pic of it and send me a PM?

By ADR / law , the speedo can read up to 13% high but absolutely zero tolerance if it is reading low. With the speedo recalibration unit in place, it should be reading about 2% high. So it should now read 100kph indicated at 98kph true. Something is wrong.

John.

the mechanical speedo correction units are simply a small gearbox. Standard outer case with gears selected from a very wide selection. Its a matter of ordering a ratio that reflects the difference in tyre diameters from old to new. If its electronic its even easier. I'd "take it back".

Hi all....has anybody out there driving a NPS had anything done to increase engine performance, like aftermarket Chip or ECU from NQR or FSS models?
According to the specifications on the Isuzu website, most of the N series and the 550 model of the F series have the 4HK1-TC engine, the NQR having 139kw/510nm and the FSS 151kw/637nm. Would love to fit an ECU from either one. However read on another post that the DPD would have to be changed as well. Probably getting to expensive.....?
I fitted a DP chip to mine about 2 years ago.....there is an improvement (but never enough) and fuel consumption is about the same, 17lt/100km. (The DP chip is fitted on the downside of the ECU and only alters fuel delivery/timing)
Happy traveling

Hi Adrian
....I have met a guy who has done it but he's the only one......is that what was in the thread you are referring to? He put an ECU (approx $1500) and the DPD (approx $2500) from a NPR 450 in his 300. Gave him 185hp up from 155hp. He said he wished had gone for the FSS550 ECU and DPD to give 205hp for the same money but all the Isuzu tech guys I talk to say that they wouldn't like to see that much going through the 300 gearbox.......when I look at the DPD , I don't understand why simply the 2 x thermocouples and 2 x pressure sensors couldn't be swapped rather than the whole DPD. Not sure........like I said, he was the only guy I've ever heard of that has done it.

Talk to Doug at Gold Coast Isuzu. He's pretty switched on with all this. I also spoke to a guy in WA who deleted his DPD too. He told me how he did it but again, if it's a new truck, you definitely need to talk to Doug re: warranty.

Failing that......Ozzyfishaman is very clued up on Steinbauer chips for the 300's. PM him.

I just posted some pics of a neat crew cab that tows a big Bushtracker. He is having a Steinbauer fitted on his way back too South Oz in the next couple of days.

Any more pics?

Hi John......yes that was the tread I was referring to (NPR 450 ECU). It also crossed my mind that an FSS ECU could be a bit heavy on the gearbox. I will leave it as it is for the time being as I have still another year warranty left. I'll have a chat to Doug next time I see him.
Glad you got out of your crash unscathed, I know you do some rigorous testing of your products, but this was taking it a bit to far......:Wow1:

clearly ditch the whole lot and run one of these ;) -

http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/en-US/literature/en-US/F01TA20022-01_DataSheet_enUS_T6748922507.pdf

its a bosch diesel racing ecu, so no room for unnecessary things like EGR, DPDs, PM filters, or any of that rubbish. same thing that audi runs on thier V8 diesel LMP1 Le Man car that makes 750hp from a 5.5L on qualifying tune. with no smoke whatsoever.
mmmmm 650hp canter...
as far as the power chips go, i think the stienbauer does a bit better job than the DP, having said that ive no personal experience with the stienbauer. btw neither can control injection timing, only rail pressure and injector duration, because its downstream of the ecu, the chip cannot send the signal to the injectors any sooner than it gets the signal from the factory ecu. they do effect injector timing indirectly though, by giving the ecu 'false' (ie higher rail pressure, and telling the ecu that more power is required) information, the ecu can alter the factory set timing for x rpm, y boost, z accelerator position.
dont quote me on this stuff though...

The steinbauer is definately a better unit than the DP chip, it does not increase fuel rail pressures which can damage your fuel system, it controls injector duration and still monitors all engine parameters as per std computer and can back off power if high temps are reached.
