Thoughts on an 1986 isuzu trooper 2.2 diesel

The only downside to Planet Isuzoo is that it was purchased by the big forum corporation Vertical Scope a few years back, so there is no one directly associated with the forum managing it anymore. But once it get confirmed, its a great resource!

Thoughts on an 1986 isuzu trooper 2.2 diesel

Lots of great info over on Planet Isuzoo. Tons of 1st Gen guys over there. What I can tell you is that an '86 Diesel is pretty rare in the US and if you can pick up a clean one, thats a win. The engine was used extensivly around the world and has a great reputation and parts are easy to get...

1998 Isuzu Amigo: Let's Try This Again

Great build, can't wait to see how it goes!

As I'm sure many of you have been waiting with baited breath for an update on my Trooper, you don't need to wait any longer! Since the last major update, I've recovered from a major injury/illness, bought a house, and got married. So the Trooper has understandably taken a bit of a back seat...

The update is "Life". In addition to all the health problems I had last year, I also bought a house, which has taken a fair amount of time to get settled in. Got married on NYE, so all the stuff associated with planning a wedding took a ton of time. 2019 Was a hell of a year! Now that's done, so...

What spare parts do you carry for your 2nd gen Isuzu Trooper

I don't carry a ton of spare parts. As someone mentioned, upgrading the tie rod's is a good idea. You can see my write up on that here . Oil, coolant, tools. As long as a Trooper is in good maintenance, it'll get you wherever you need to go without many issues. They're every bit as tough as a...

Replaced the fuel pump yesterday and its running like a champ again! Once I get into my new house, I'll be starting to work on upgrades again soon!

Update of sorts. Took the Trooper out on its first real trip since the rebuild two weeks ago to the Swell. We ran Eagle Canyon, Eva Conover, North and South Coal Wash and Devils Racetrack. Everything was running like a champ until I bounced a bit on a ledge on Devils Racetrack. After that...

If its a 3.2L SOHC then the valve tick is common, as I'm sure you know. Its due to varnish building up on the top of the lifters. How I always used to take care of it was by running an oil with diesel detergent in it (like Rotela T6). Tick would away within a few miles after the oil change. When...

I'd still rebuild the engine, they are great vehicles and the engines are strong and reliable if taken care of. My issue was the machine shop did a shoddy job. They were a good shop, but they were more geared towards Big 3 V8's and such. Fortunately it was nothing that couldn't be corrected. So...

I just noticed the self tapping ones. Thats great. I'm more fascinated by the titanium rod. That sucker isn't next to the bone, that's IN the bone. They drilled a hole from my knee to the shattered bits at the bottom of my tibia and fed that sucker in and bolted all the bits to it.

Weeeellll... Due to a slight mishap on the ski slopes about three weeks ago, any major progress on the Trooper is going to be delayed for 4-6 months.

Phase II: Well, someone backed into me this morning, so I guess that means I need to build a new bumper…

Phase I: I got the Trooper back yesterday afternoon from the shop and here was the verdict: the head bolts had not been torqued properly! The machine shop agreed that it was their fault, so they covered the repair. So while I'm not terribly happy with their work, at least they are acting like...

Phase I: Last Thursday I went hunting for why I was having such a hard time starting the Trooper. Step one was to pull the plugs; and what did I find? Coolant in four of the six cylinders! Oh, boy… This also explains why when I'd start it on these cold days my exhaust condensation plume was so...

    Reliability of older Isuzu Troopers

Get a 92-95 Trooper with the 5-speed. Thats generally considered the "sweet spot" for Troopers. The weakest element of the 2nd Gen Trooper was the 4L30E, but the MAU5 manual is bulletproof. The 3.2L is a great motor, many people a scared because they develop a tick on the SOHC ones, but 99% of...

Thanks, its been a good experience. I've rebuilt a couple Samurai motors over the years, but nothing quite this extensive. I've been a shade mechanic my whole life, some of my earliest memories are handing my dad tools to work on his Renault 5; but this project has put every bit of knowledge to...

Yes. I had to unbolt the exhaust cam and then I could lift it up and slide the tensioner out and back in.

Phase I: I've put around 250 miles on the clock since replacing the cam chain tensioner and the ticking noise is gone! So happy about that. But, one issue is resolved, another crops up. I am now experiencing an issue with hard starting. Happens whether it is warm or cold; but it can really...
