To Land Cruiser 80 Or Not To Land Cruiser 80?

But the OP is interested in towing a 3-4k lbs trailer. Which is the approaching the maximum legal weight to tow with this beast in North America. I don't mind dragging my boat around, but it is pretty light, at about 1/3 the weight that he's planning on towing. I believe that the 100-series...

2003 Land Cruiser first time buyer

I hope you used genuine parts for the front axle shafts. Some of the aftermarket units are junk. If they weren't clicking, my personal preference is to clean and lube, then replace the boots.

Drivability of 35" tires compared to 33"

I've been driving my 97 LX450 since I got it with 315/75-16 BF Goodrich KM/2. Stock gearing. Originally at stock height(!) for almost two years before finally pulling the trigger on OME 850-860. I don't really tow much, when I do, it's a small boat. No experience with the 33s because I ditched...

To Land Cruiser 80 Or Not To Land Cruiser 80?

Other than towing, its an awesome vehicle. If you can put up with towing at a snails pace, go for it. If you actually need more ooomph, the 96-97 can accommodate a TRD supercharger. All that said, I tow a small boat around sometimes, on 35" tires without regearing. 97 LX450 which is...

You can find the steel jerry cans from British Atlantic parts. I believe they're also called...

You can find the steel jerry cans from British Atlantic parts. I believe they're also called roverparts or something similar. They're sold for non-potable water and labelled as such, because they cannot be sold as fuel containers. Using a safety siphon is the easiest way to transfer it to your...

    Lets talk about gas storage

For all of you that are considering jerry cans for fuel, the NATO type steel ones with the flip tops are the best that I have ever used. Certified to not leak after a 10m drop (that's 33ft) is good enough for me. Easy to use, no wrenches required like with some of the mil spec ones to open after...

Tents vs. Hammocks for backpacking and overland

If you're backpacking you may also want to consider a siltarp instead of a tent. My siltarp is about 400g (14oz) and allows me to hike with less effort due to the weight difference between my tarp and the lightest tents. Yes, it's a bit more finicky to set up. And yes, I hike with trekking poles...

    great tire size debate

I've had smaller tires on my 80 and wouldn't trade my 315s for anything smaller. Fuel economy doesn't improve at all with these trucks no matter what you do. Run some premium dampers and be done with the mods. Just drive it!

Has anyone here ever replaced valve stem seals on a 1FZ-FE without pulling the head?

If you can take cams out of a 2jz without breaking them you can pull cams out of a 1fz

    good kid sleeping bag?

In Canada MEC sells a down sleeping bag in child sizes. We have two of them and they're awesome. Just make sure your kids know to not breathe into them (keep the nose and mouth outside, use the hood properly) and they'll last forever. Or until they out grow them.

My first Land Cruiser need advice.

For mostly off pavement travel I believe either truck will work fine. For travelling at freeway speeds...fzj80 will get up to 80mph on 35s with stock gearing, given friendly terrain. As always, buy the nicest truck you can afford. Consider spending a few more bucks for a nicer truck. More time...

    80-Series suspension lift - alignment?

Did you pull the trigger on your suspension yet? If not, here's a couple things I've learned. My pre-lift caster was 2.0 deg. So I slotted the mounting holes until my post-lift caster was also 2.0 deg. The axles didn't move sideways enough with my OME heavy front/ medium rear springs for me...

    Outdoor Kid Photo Thread

We knew about the possibility of snow on the Whipsaw Trail in October but we were hoping it wouldn't prevent us from having a good time. Kids had fun. Dogs had fun. Landcruiser didn't get stuck once we chained up the tires.

    Offroad fishing Trailer

Sub'd. Cool build. Can't wait to see the finished product. Wondering why the spring u-bolts aren't the flipped style, so that they'll slide over obstacles. I realize that spring under setups can be less likely to get hung up in the first place, with the leaf acting like a skid.

    One Spare Tire or Two?

Tire irons aren't expensive, and don't take much space. They're also handy for prying all sorts of other stuff. A piece of hose can help reduce gouging with tire irons. Having the tire bead pushed down opposite of the spot you're working on will help a lot when flipping a bead off. No matter how...

How do you manage/backup your photos?

No mention of hardware? I'm setting up a NAS for the home office, and will burn physical backups to disc and store offsite. Not interested in net access to my pics. I may select some for an album on my phone or tablet, but not for the bulk of the images.
