    Winch options: TS9500 vs M8000

Yeah Craigslist guys are on some strange substances sometimes. You can find 8274 used for $300 or less sometimes. A bit of love and they're functional again.

    Winch options: TS9500 vs M8000

I did exactly this. I got a used m8000 needing a rope and a remote. I painted the drum and quickly greased up the internals, then spooled synthetic rope on. Wired up in-cab controls and called it a day. Have used it for 6 years now, multiple hours of pulling, and no issues at all

FJ80 winch advice, do i need to us my M12000 or something smaller

Not really a little old 8k lol. 8724 is one of the strongest winches made. That said, I'm using an m8000 and haven't had any problems. But I take the snatch block out regularly, I like to be proactive and anticipate issues, don't like to react when problems arise. My m8000 is spooled with 85'...

A few questions on recovery gear

^^ yes. I have both a Viking and a Masterpull yanker, both are excellent. I believe the Bubba is of the same design.

    One Spare Tire or Two?

I have a few friends with Unimogs and half of them have two spares for some reason.

A few questions on recovery gear

Be careful when yanking with hitch pins. They have a very strong shear strength but can be bent. If they're badly bent, they may not come back out of the hole. Also, Viking, Masterpull and a few others make a 3/4" and 7/8" x 20' kinetic recovery rope that works very well. Most of the time I...

    One Spare Tire or Two?

What vehicle and where are you planning on heading? What weight and tire size? Easily available tires or some weird esoteric tire? My 80-series has one spare, but I can carry a second, but I also carry tire plugs and have a source of compressed air. I'm not running some weird size, so I'm...

    Stock or near stock vehicles

My 80-series is very close to stock. I added a winch and hid it inside the original front bumper. I did a 2" lift and put on the biggest tires that would fit (35") and that's pretty much it, unless you count the cb radio, GPS, and LED backup lamps. I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere...

    F150 Raptor Expedition Build thread

Wow! This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen from any manufacturer. Almost as cool as the truck itself. Looking good so far, can't wait to see more. Keep up the excellent work.

Considerations when upgrading from wire to synthetic rope

Hmmmm some ARB fairlead mounting holes are offset a bit too, so many regular aluminum hawse fairleads won't fit. The warn one that sells for around $40-50 is one that may not fit :( If there are no nicks and burrs on your steel rollers they can work too. Or a new steel roller fairlead can be...

    bigger rubber 35+

I'm on 35s on my 80-series because that's the optimum value point for tire size vs suspension and body mods. In my case the spare lives in the stock spot, and the truck drives fine at any speed.

Power to rear hitch mounted winch?

For a rear winch a solenoid, switch, breaker, or other method for power interrupt is a Good Idea(tm) but for a nose powered winch I don't bother. Consider that your starter wire has no form of short circuit protection, and it is about the same length as the winch power wire. So as long as the...

    Toyota 4.0L Musings

Yes. That's the difference from what I was told. Same engine, same output, but the newer ones are rated on regular and not premium fuel. As for the power difference between a Tacoma, FJ, and 4Runner with the same engines, I was told it is due to different exhaust. Not better or worse, just...

Considerations when upgrading from wire to synthetic rope

You'll unspool all that before winching anyways, what difference does it make? A steel wire rope would sproing on you, but synthetic line doesn't care. The newer Warn aluminum hawse fairleads have a fairly wide gap, wide enough for me to carefully fish out the thimble before I head out...

Considerations when upgrading from wire to synthetic rope

Warn aluminum fairlead is cheap, light, and has better approach angle than a roller fairlead. I use the door latch strikers to open bottles.

Considerations when upgrading from wire to synthetic rope

Consider buying a synthetic extension of 3/8" line. Cheaper, lighter, easier to manage, and can be rigged up against a pulley (16k pull) and you don't have to worry about the extension breaking. I have a 40' extension, cost less than $100 and weights a couple pounds at most. I don't have a...

Power to rear hitch mounted winch?

IMO the winch wiring is critical when it comes to dependability.

Power to rear hitch mounted winch?

My m8000 isn't fused. The cables are very short and well protected from collision damage and chafing. I use military type battery terminals and properly crimped eye terminals, and 2/0 wiring for both power and ground side. The ground wire runs directly back to the battery as well.

Power to rear hitch mounted winch?

Only comment about Anderson plugs is that they're usually directly connected to your battery, and can be susceptible to tampering or mischief. Consider the installation of a safety switch or solenoid, or tuck the connector where its not obvious. For convenience reasons they are hard to beat...

Any benefit to remote reservoir shocks?

This is the major reason for me to fit remotes onto my 80-series. To maximize up travel for higher speed stuff, and maximize articulation while retaining a lower ride height. I basically have a 10" travel shock in the same space that the original 7-8" travel shocks fit. You can set it up for...
