Buying an Old 4Runner or Landcruiser for Noob

Some good points here. I'd go with a 3.4L Tacoma or 4Runner over any of the other suggestions in this thread. Obviously try to find one with good mainentance that hasn't been beaten to death. A pre-purchase inspection at your local Toyota dealership could be money very well spent. A 97 or...

Buying an Old 4Runner or Landcruiser for Noob

Skip the Landcruiser unless you have deep pockets or absolutely MUST have one. What the others have said, stay away from the 3.0L engines. If you're actually looking for a 4wheeling truck to play around with, an early (pre-85) toy pickup that isn't rusted to death could be a good choice. Solid...

Trailside air: compressor or CO2 can?

I run an engine driven OBA compressor bolted to the side of the head on a bracket. Once you've used a system like this you might get spoiled and never use anything else. Essentially 100% duty cycle with enough capacity to run air tools.

The "B Team" or backup gear

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. The cotton balls/ointment, did you make that or is it commercially available? How do you store it? My essentials kit for backpacking is very similar. Just grab n go. But since I'm backpacking I skip the GPS, radio, and spare batteries. My "A kit" is your B kit. I...

    Creative storage UNDER your rig???

I had a small 2gal air tank there on my 84 toy pickup for OBA. I used 5/8" aluminum fuel piping from a race car supply shop and brass JIC-10 fittings from a plumbing shop (same as -10AN racecar stuff, but 1/4 the price). I installed a pressure relief valve and a water drain just like the home...

Car seats, all the same or one better than the others?

Yep, we did just as Big Daddy did. Graco infant carrier with ISO base in wife's car. The stroller has been passed around for years now, my wife's friend's cousin is using it, almost 8 years later. I think its finally due for retirement. At the time I was driving a 2-door corolla ae86 hatch so...

Lowering a full size truck with RTT for garage height clearance...

How tall is a raptor? Most parking garages are at least 6'8" and I sneak into those all the time even though my land cruiser is almost 6'10". Just got to watch those sprinkler heads. As for corollas, you'll be getting another one some day. They're in your blood.

Inside Shower in a TC without an inside shower???

The guys with boats use the bathroom as the shower stall. But it's one of those things that you'd do when designing the campwr

    Making a ifting roof on a 110

Very impressive work, I've been following your progress from here in Canada, across the big pond. It's a big commitment to cut a hole in the roof! To reduce the dangers of the roof piece when flipping it over, you could have tied a rope to the lid, and to a beam or other solid anchor in front...

Trying to advise a friend on 100 purchase

You may be confusing the bumper with the rear crossmember? The pictures show a rusty rear crossmember, which is a welded part of the frame. The bumper cover is exactly that, a cover that goes over the rear crossmember. In short, not replaceable.

3 season tent or 0 degree bag

To help keep your bag clean, always wear a full pajama set of some sort. Most important part is socks. Going to bed barefoot is the second best way to grunge up your sleeping bag IMO. Best way to funk it up is to sleep nekkid. I recommend a full change of clothes, so that you're not sleeping...

FJZ80 to LR3, am I asking for trouble?

But that $5-10k will be well spent in repairs avoidance... 120-series are good trucks. 4.7L v8 is a good engine. If you're happy with your Toyota product, there's a good reason to stick with that brand.

3 season tent or 0 degree bag

Sleeping bag for sure. Consider getting an over-bag to help with the cold weather, then you won't be spending hundreds on something you'll only use a few months of the year. Fwiw, I sleep under a tarp when backpacking, even when below freezing, and I use a 30F down bag, but slip on a primaloft...

How much lift do i NEED?

Actually I've driven around for a couple years with 315-75-16 (35") tires with stock suspension. The tires fit fine, there is some rubbing over speed bumps and stuff, but low-speed rock crawling isn't a big deal. So you don't NEED a lift to run 35s, but its not ideal. 35s fit fine with OME...

    I need a new wallet...

Cheap and ultralight, I've been carrying one of these for over a year. Not really waterproof, but once they dry out they feel the same as before. Never went swimming in mine, but its gotten soaked a few times. Best for people who want ultra light, ultra thin, and ultra cheap.

    what tools do you take/use?

I just pull floor mats out of my truck to kneel on or lay down on when I need to do emergency repairs. I figure its better than laying down on dirt or snow. And I'm not carrying special single purpose items this way.

    Netbooks? (2013 edition)

I had an eeePC 10" convertible touch screen netbook that worked awesome on win7 and also win8. It came loaded with win7 and I really had no complaints other than the fact that the OS wasn't touch friendly. I used it for years, often pulling the built-in stylus out when I needed pinpoint control...
