    Hard wiring a fridge

I've hard-wired fridges in every one of my trucks and Jeeps for about 15 years. I've always run 8 gauge wire from the battery and put a switch on the dash so I could easily turn the fridge on and off. In the newest truck, I went with a 20-amp remote-controlled switch (...

So I'm going a different route...

Congrats on the CJ purchase...good choice and nice vehicle. I took the same route. One reason I got rid of my JKUR and started looking for a CJ was because of simplicity. Modern vehicles are much harder to work on in the field. And there's something slightly askew with having to reboot a...

    Remote control cameras/Drones/Quadcopters

What you have been seeing is probably drone or quadcopter footage...and chances are most of it was taken with a DJI Phantom. DJI is the gazillion-lb gorilla in the drone market. With GPS stabilization and Hazard Avoidance, the newest quads almost fly themselves. I started flying...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

Beautiful pup. It's way too damn hard when you lose them. Our dog person has had 3 Australian Shepherds...currently has 2. She went clear to the SE U.S. to pick up her latest. They make great search dogs in the hot desert. We had number 112 last night...8 calls in the last 6 days. It's...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

So I've taken it seriously. This is what I ended up with: Large handle on the side of the switch box disconnects panel from controller. It's probably overkill...but it works perfectly. It will maintain the battery in this:

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

I would leave it connected, but my '82 Scrambler doesn't have the payload capacity to carry my garage around. oh...I see dwh littered the forum with another one of his posts. Reading his previous posts was a complete waste of time, so can someone tell me if his latest is worth reading or if it...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

I kinda figured that from your name. I assume you are a dog handler from your photo. We have a fantastic dog handler. She and her dog train a HUGE amount in Utah and Colorado. Looks like it might be the same breed of dog as yours...australian something if I remember right. Congrats on the...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

Thanks very much for your informative answer. Perhaps I should have gotten the solar suitcase, and maybe I will still pick one up for the trail. I wanted something I could mount permanently and that didn't seem to fit the bill for where and how I wanted to mount it. It would have been nice if...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

It may be overkill for this application (kinda like a 100W panel being overkill for simply maintaining a Jeep battery), but I ordered a Square D 30A 600V DC Disconnect box/switch to put between the panel and controller. I also ordered a meter that will be mounted near the controller to...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

Verkstad and AndrewP...Thanks for the informative and civil answers. I'll install a quick-disconnect between the panel and the controller. Too bad some people jump on every opportunity to be A..holes. Hiding behind the anonymity of the internet, I guess that's how they safely get their...

    Solar charging - Connection protocol?

I just bought a Renogy 100-watt system for maintaining the Odyssey Group 34 battery in my Scrambler which often sits idle for weeks at a time. The instruction booklet states: "Connect battery terminal wires to the charge controller FIRST then connect the solar panel to the charge controller...

    Jeep Pickup pics

Since the title of the thread is "Jeep Pickup Pics", I thought I might as well toss in a couple of pics of my Jeep pickup taken recently. Payload is rated at 1500 lbs. Judging from the reaction I get every time I drive this, Chrysler would do well if they emulated it in the new truck design...

    Jeep Pickup pics

I see arguments like this every time a folding windshield is mentioned. A folded windshield is meant for use on the trail...with the transfer case in low-range...not on the pavement at bug-splattering speeds. If bugs are dying on your glasses or in your teeth, put the darn windshield back up...

    A Scrambler's Homecoming

Almost simultaneously with the re-discovery and re-acquisition of my Scrambler, Peterson's 4-Wheel & Off-Road reprinted a four-page 1981 review of the Scrambler in their May, 2016, issue. It included a comparison of the newly-introduced CJ8 with a 1929 Model A Roadster pickup (see below). Since...

Which fridge? I'm researching but a lot options out there!

In the past 15 years, I've had ARB, FridgeFreeze, and a couple of Waecos...never had a single problem with any of them. The only reason I ever switched was because of changing sizes. The FridgeFreeze was the most bombproof...but also the heaviest.

COOPER DISCOVERER - Trying to enter the Maze of Canyonlands ending in failure

It's just above Ken's Lake south of Moab. It's a diversion of Mill Creek...goes through the Seely Tunnel and into Ken's Lake (a man-made reservoir). It's not a natural stream bed, but makes for nice photos. There is a campground just below the spot in the photo. The Maze has always been one...

    A Scrambler's Homecoming

I have to disagree. One reason I got rid of the JK and started looking for a CJ was because of simplicity. Modern vehicles are much harder to work on in the field (or on an expedition) than older vehicles...unless you are a computer expert. There's something slightly wrong with having to...
