I'm thinking these are two extremely incompatible things. My suggestion is to find a hard top, maybe used, and add a permanent rack to that. Then it's easy to just swap roofs.

That's funny! We looked at one too and same reaction. The rear doors and blind spots were deal-breakers. It wouldn't take much to turn a new FJ/LC into another success with a larger market share.
