Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Mongolia has nothing to do with it. For me at least. ......and every single person I ever wheeled or camped with. But fyi, I did use to tow 300 gallons of diesel every year during hurricane season. Really wasn't a big deal. Last year I had a 55g drum of gasoline in the bed of the...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

I'll play, just for fun. -gas is lighter. Better off road performance, higher cargo capacity, less wear on front unit bearings -gas is more reliable -a little bit of water in the fuel won't destroy a gas engine -run ok on wet nasty 3rd world country fuel. -way better in the winter -capable of...

    Old Junk vs. New Junk?

Go new. Since trucks are in style, bargain used trucks are tough to find. It's just too easy to damage modern trucks, you never know what you get with a used truck. $40k gets you a Ford or Dodge that'll do everything the older burbs do. Our 8.1's might have been detuned, because fleet...

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

Yeah, I'm going to burn through a set of 35" tires before trying 37's again.

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

TC is nowhere near as good as lockers. Full throttle while the TC manages spin with your brakes, is very sketchy. Although it did get me unstuck in a box stock truck, when an earlier year truck would have been completely done for.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

In mid west or NE mud: Diesel 350 is to gas 250, as gas 250 is to gas f150. There is no denying it, weight hurts bad in slick mud. Once I got over the cool factor of the diesel, the gas engine checked all of my boxes far better. I've got other rides I can take to starbucks. I crossed the...

    Opinions on Suburban 2001 rig?

Race car trailers are very heavy towing. Completely wrong reasoning there. RV's contain foam, plastic, and wood veneer. Race car trailers haul steel tools, steel tool boxes, steel jacks, and steel stands. Racing is 24/7, not just a weekend hobby. Race through the work week while fixing...

oh wow. That body lift works well

Sure, but they never make it all the way to San Fran. lolz.

oh wow. That body lift works well

Well, it is a 99% accurate scale representation of exactly how Jeep overlanders drive. 1% more would be if those cases split open and spilled their plastic contents all over the hill where people will never bother to clean up. Then it would be 100% accurate.

    Kimbo Campers

Need to work on that exterior aesthetic. It's a bit ugly. Fullsize 6.5' better have a nice shower.

oh wow. That body lift works well

Lots of ****** in this one. Visor falls and blocks window? Keeps on going. No rocks just pristine dirt? And there just happens to be another jeep flipped over to land on? They're RC models. The tire track next to the weed in the foreground kinda gave it away. Or you guys have killer...

need feed back for which truck and pop up camper to buy

When I bought my truck, the diesels on the lot were well over 1000# heavier. You have to go up to a 350 to have the same cargo capacity of a gas 250. Diesels have much less payload. No single piece of your cargo, except the camper, weighs as much as the diesel, and it's extra batteries...

    Don’t air down Cooper tires!

Those era explorers were some of the worst vehicles I ever saw. Tires to roof, everything about them sucked. Why would anyone buy one over a 4runner? Econolines and GM Express vans are extremely prone to flipping over with rear tire blowouts as well. But since everyone already knew that...

    Don’t air down Cooper tires!

Please quit being douchy to the support people. Not cool. No tire company can officially say that a DOT tire can be safely air'd down then abused off road. There's liability involved. Pitbull and Maxxis might be able to get away with such, because those tires may not be intended for the...

    NEW RIG: 2012 F-150 FX4

I got that lug nut from Napa for Free. This thread is really why I never, ever, buy a used American vehicle. New I can get perfect reliability from most of them. Used? They've all needed extensive repairs and maintenance. And custom anything is an instant red flag.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

I shoot for 2500 to 3000 rpm towing gas. Lower if flat terrain.

Diesel for overlanding- are you happy with the choice?

4 mpg won't pay for a metering valve replacement, when the dealers moron technician skips that $250 part, and replaces the whole fuel system after denying warranty coverage because his safety glasses fogged up. It's nice though, up until that point. Wake me up when dealers start training...

Ram and Ford HD owners.....enter here.

I'd put them under the bed on the frame. I'm using a scuba tank for air currently. Make a rack for them so the whole darn thing can be mounted and removed with just two bolts. It's so easy with a fullsize, no custom kits would even sell.

Why aren't more tacoma owners up in arms about their trucks?

I wouldn't warranty that. Yeah it's an off road stickered truck. But off road has never been covered by warranty. If you bring me your truck, and it's plastered with muddy sand underneath, I'll do what I can, bit if warranty isn't being generous, your paying $135/hr for my time. Ford...
