Don't mean to hijack but the Henkels terostat is a great product, super easy to work with an cleans up easy. It is sold under Loctite Terson NA 939 name in the US, black or white. Total composites has another manufacturers version, at least I think they are similar technology.

As everyone else has stated appropriate weight ratings are the most important. With that set up correctly you can add shocks to a torsion axle. Schutt has been doing it and I believe they use the TorFlex axles.
You can contact Firgelli Automation. They do all things actuators and have great customer service. I believe you must have the actuator built for the exact height you need, supposedly limiting straps cause issues. Firgelli will build any length you want and their price is at least as good.
I put 40K on our 02 G500 without any issues, sold at 90K. Stay on top of PM and its not really too bad. The 5L engine is very common and fairly old technology so its easy to work on. Some of the G specific forums have a ton of DIY info, with some members here being great resources as well...
I believe they use a typical wood framed structure under very thin FRP. With the flex at that location its possible those are just cracks from the repeated movement. Im betting its not structural. Long story... see what the manufacturer tells you and go from there.

Storing your steps inside, possibly hanging from the inside of your door is a cleaner solution. You have to open the door anyway and your step won't be covered in dirt & dust to track in. Very easy to create hanging bracket and strap to secure and stop banging while still be being quick to...
Personal opinion only... Its just a typical RV with larger tires and decorated up for "off road." Nothing related to a real off road trailer, like several teardrop manufacturers here or Australian caravans.
