Oh, BTW, don't believe 4Runners had airbags until 3rd generation, which would be '96. Dunno about side protection, but suspect it's the same story-none until '96.
This is a good choice, given your budget. If you get the 3.0, make sure it's had the head gasket recall done. I'd say ZERO vehicle mods. Spend any extra money, after tent and other outdoor gear, on maintenance items.
Supposed to be a sticker with mileage when T belt was changed, so if none than it's probably never been done.
Heater hose T fitting: Not a big deal, but if you buy then it'd be a good idea to replace as preventative maintenance, provided it hasn't been done already. They're known to spring...
I sold mine. :sombrero: It was a '92. Frame from spring hangars back, and the spring hangars themselves were rotting. Fuel lines too. Full disclosure to buyer, BTW. We get lots of precipitation here, and salt is occasionally used in the winter on roads for the ice. Plus, the soil at the...
Good guess. Toyota has to be mindful of the fleet MPG goals, so a big, macho rig is out. Maybe even-horrors-a hybrid version will be available. Oh well, the Renegade is pretty cute. :agree:
Electrical gremlins? Nah, you're thinking about Land Rovers. Any rig can potentially break down, but these are one of the very least likely to do so. Provided you can afford the whopping gas bill, I say go for it.

FJ40 and 60 series Land Cruisers came stock with about the same size, if not smaller tires, and so did 1st and 2nd generation 4Runners. Bigger tires have become more fashionable though, for sure.
Quote: Toyota said Wednesday morning it will bring something called the FT-4X concept to the show, dropping a two-sentence statement titled "Four Wheeling. Scene Stealing."
For sure. Digressing from the 100 vs.80 battle this thread has become, I shall mention that other less expensive to own and operate models would also suit him fine as a family adventure vehicle.
Such as, 4Runner, Xterra, and others.
How'd it go up there in Nome? There was a beautiful, no rust two tone FJ62 for sale on Anchorage Craigslist yesterday for $5700. Rebuilt engine, OME suspension, no troubles with it.
Gone today. You? :)
For a family vacation/weekend rig, of those two options I would look for the nicest 100 series available and, other than removing the running boards, wouldn't modify it in the least.
