Technically, you are correct, but building something for a fast multi-day adventure still can fall under that description... despite not being in a sanctioned competition.
What is your budget? I tend to build my vehicles a bit more towards this type than many... I have some background with high performance AWD cars built for daily driving dirt roads along with snow/ice.... when applied to a US 4x4 you get rally raid with technical trail ability.
My wife drove a late vin# 04 V8 Treg for over 7 years. Working on the thing was not fun, and a few rather large expensive problems later in its life, despite low mileage and great maintenance, had us send it down the road. With that said, it is probably the best do it all crossover vehicle...
I need to update the linked thread... same thing, though. There may be more efficient motors than the XP.

Nonimouse.... I owe you some photos!
I love the thought of diesel swaps, and have entertained doing them for years. However, IMO, the 22RTE will be a far easier swap and much cheaper to maintain. Power is easily and reliably run up into the 170 hp range, and torque over 200 ft/lbs. Mileage remains excellent for a small gasser. I...
Add a nice intercooler, reduced intake temps = gain reliability and performance. The air to liquid OEM Celica units may work well as they are desiged to mount over the valve cover... or something aftermarket?
OK, due to time and the 10.5" mess up (machine shop error), I'm moving on to using the 10" Sequoia diff. After some serious searching, I found a differential center that is so close to dropping into the 10" Sequoia differential that I can taste it. It will need some machining, but it will fit. A...
Yes, I have a couple of these, including the T-15 pictured above, it's modded to fit another truck.
Bumper is built from .215" thick aluminum.
Not as strong as a steel unit, but it will do what you require far better than the stock unit. It's roughly 1/3 - 1/2 the weight of a comparable...
Have you considered a 2nd generation Tundra? The double cabs are pretty decent in size, and can be had in the $18k - 20k range. They are a Land Cruiser under the skin.
Thanks for the comps.
I will probably gusset the top, but there is more hiding in that bump structure than can be seen in the picture.
Diesel was under consideration last winter, even had a complete twin turbo V8 Land Cruiser drive line located. I passed for several reasons including but not...
