Thanks @DoubleDD. Yeah maybe a few too many details!
I do have a drawer stop for the drawer in the camper. It’s just a piece of 1/8 aluminum with a thumb bolt into a t-nut in the 8020. flip it up in camp, flip it down to drive. I added it after taking the pictures and forgot to mention it...
If you ever want a camper or just a topper with the ability to sleep in it think hard about the DoubleCab with the 6.5’ bed. You’d be surprised how roomy the back seats are and how much floor space you gain with one or both folded up.
Of course @sn_85 is right, the crew cabs are cavernous, if...
Like it a lot. Don’t have to worry about which side the sun is on. It really expands the partially indoor partially outdoor living space on the tailgate. With the addition of a gutter between it and the camper body we can sit there in the rain and be dry and protected. We tend to cook...
I used this stuff in the 5mm thickness. It works really well. Super light weight. Put it over the “joists” in my camper roof with VHB and some foil tape and it’s been good for 2.5 years now. I was more concerned with heat being in the Southwest, but it’s been very good for cold too. I didn’t...
+1 for SilkySaws. But really any Japanese cut on the pull saws will be great. The larger ones like the Silky Big Boy can cut through some really big wood amazingly fast. I use my Big Boy a lot for trail clearing and it will cut up to 1” branches with just one or two strokes and bigger stuff...
Make it yourself out of aluminum angle, 1/16 sheet, VHB and pop rivet?
Boxes are pretty basic structures and aluminum is easily cut with any power saw and a carbide tiped blade.
Looks like a great start on an interior build!
I notice you bolted the camper onto the bed. How was that process on the Tundra — did you have to remove the bed rails?
FWIW, for the first year, I anchored my awning straps (we have the same awning) to my sliders as you are doing. After...
If you’re going to stick VHB to vinyl, you probably should use the LSE VHB (low surface, energy) version. Vinyl and other plastics have plasticizers embedded that leak out over time and weaken the bond pretty significantly.
You can also use regular VHB on plastics and rubber by using a flame...
Very nice build!
Two questions: were those RCI catalytic converter guards really difficult to install? I have a set but haven’t gotten into it yet. I’ve got the old skid plate that has to be drilled for them.
Second question: with the RCI front skid plate is there enough room to wiggle the...
I haven’t tried it, but I know I’ve read of one person on Expo who has done it with the vent lifted just slightly and with the fan on 3, I think he said, blowing in. I know there’s a fancier Max fan than the typical one Jay specs that has a remote and and is designed to be left open while...
Love the barn doors. No harder to open and close one than a hatch with two latches. The hatch does give you some cover, but we have a rear 180º awning which makes the tailgate like a covered porch. Wouldn’t be without either.
One door has the latches and the other has the interior slider...
I can’t speak to the siding, as I do have the anodized. However, all the non-anodized mill aluminum corners and window frames (edit; and roof) are standing up very well - no corrosion.
I think there’s two things at least that make the anodized a good choice. First, it’s just not as bright and...
Here’s a remarkably (to me at least) clear eyed and and logical run through of the risk profile for an overweight Tacoma. From the Blog of the folks ExpeditionPortal.com is featuring as “Two Rogue Wanderers”. See the section titled “The Challenges of the Tacoma”.
There are no absolutes! It...
You might get more traffic and relevant experiences over in the Pop-up Camper sub-forum and possibly the 12 volt/Electrical one, but the Thread Police will probably not hunt you down for posting this here. . .:D
Great trip and great trip report! I’ve been to Tuweep and Gold Butte, but wanted to do the inbetween and this is motivating. Thanks for the details. Seems like a great trip!
