Not a chaser, but a volunteer spotter for the NWS and a local tv station. Fortunately we live near NOAA and the regional NWS headquarters so we have a convenient place to attend training each year.
If you can elevate the front a bit (ramps, etc.) it will burp easier. Not sure about the ding. My 04 didn't do it. Try connecting the "solenoid" with it off to the side so any ECU's or BCU's see it. Sounds like you're on the right track man.
My next test is to monitor the voltage drop under load. I'm going to have a camera on the scangauge for the system voltage and another on a voltmeter at the winch. I figure it's safer than having my big ol' head stuck down next to an operating winch. I'll just video it running under load...
