Keep in mind that the GENIII is unibody (if I'm not mistaken). So really rough terrain will result in more body flex which obviously is not good. But you'd really have to work it to make that an issue.
Damn. Even with low PSI traction can be hard to come by. Any Monteros use the rear locker and if so, was it any help? It sounded like the Merc used all the lockers a few times and it helped tremendously.
I'll tell you exactly what to look for: service records. Couple of items to specifically look for:
1. Brakes (specially front) as it can be costly to do rotors and pads
2. Lower plenum (the part alone is 400)
3. Spark plugs
4. Plug wires
5. Injector replacement or service
6. Coil replacement...
I had a chance this morning to weigh the car and see exactly what we have here. The weight worked out to roughly 4670 lbs. This does not include me. Note that the 3rd row is removed, I'm running taller/wider tires than stock (so more mass), and about 2/3 fuel in the tank. For its era that is...
One more item I took care of today. I changed the rear wiper blade. Only reason I mention it is that this is not a typical wiper blade where it clips on. The rear screws on. See the picture:
So Pep Boys (and I suspect other typical auto parts places) didn't have it. I got it from a local...

1. Remove the rear cover in the rear
2. Remove cover by front...

I really want to go there again this coming weekend. Not sure yet of Saturday or Sunday though. As of right now (Monday night), they're saying it might rain again next weekend. I think that would be perfect.
It is really pretty up there especially when it is raining or there is moisture...
I drove up into Angeles Forest yesterday and got a couple of pix worth sharing. I also drove on a mud fire road and almost got stuck but luckily turned around before it was too late. But it was a little scary. No pix of that one as I have in a hurry to get out!
I agree on the correct line comment. My car and my buddy's both got stuck in a spot, where a simple adjustment of the line resulted in being able to make it.
As for speed/damage trade-off; I completely agree. In my situation (absent of rocks and other serious debris), going 3MPH vs. 1MPH can...
