I have a 24V truck but have a dedicated 12V battery with it's own charger.
I run all my 12V electrics (ham and cb radios, stereo deck and amp, 12V power ports) off the 12V, powered through a Rigrunner. Anderson Powerpoles on everything, plug and play works great.
Animal strikes are my biggest worry with night riding.
I usually try to be off the road by dusk on a trip. When I'm not, the amount of deer I see take the fun right out of it.
I use the Larsen NMO 2/70 with a spring at the base of the whip. Never a problem with trees, brush, etc.
Cut the whip the equivalent length of the spring and away you go.
I've had thoughts of a 4BD1-T in a cheap 80 since driving my Dad's Tahoe transplant. There's a lot to like about that motor, not the least of which is how cheap they are to buy and (re)build.
Bet it would be great in a mine truck.
I've been happy with my VX-6R. I don't have much experience with other HTs to compare it with though.
I use the mobile far more than the HT, but it's nice to have.
I have the poly hose - it's nice. Small, pliable and light, rated to -40. Seems just fine, though I don't have any routed under the truck or under the hood.
