    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

You are missing a critical piece of data that is driving the automotive sector: "............And electric cars are about to be jammed into the market at a remarkable rate thanks to 2020 European regulations, consumer indifference be damned. .........." You WILL buy what you are told to buy or...

The only viable powertrain option for us is the P400 MHEV, power wise. In addition to the $12K price tag I have significant concerns on long term ownership of that subsystem/s. So much so that I'm likely out with respect to the new Defender. In addition I'm also likely not going to be a...

The Defender was introduced to the uncertainty of the automotive world that is experiencing significant changes. Who will survive? Frankfurt's no-shows, darkened halls signal an industry in flux FRANKFURT — You didn't need to look far to spot a metaphor for this year's Frankfurt auto show —...

The evolution/investment direction for the new Defender, actually the entire JLR product line, will be to hybrid and full EV. Complexity will jump as will cost. Owner serviceability will significantly decline. You see that in JLR investments and partnerships. Government regulation will further...

Found the following on MHEV powertrains which provides some insight into $12K adder and the large increase in ECU's. MHEV - mild hybrid - does it really improve MPG

Its a 85 that is "light-weight" compared to today's luxo RR's. Drive a early 80's RRC and you will understand.

For reference my son has a 85 RRC with Isuzu 4cyl tdi diesel swapped in. He gets ............. 40mpg.

I do realize that LR optioned up for the 3.0L but $12K? There is much more technology on the MHEV so I would expect the drivetrain cost to be much higher than the base 2.0L Turbo

It's all about the torque curve. While you cruising at 1700 rpm at 70mph the gas versions are in the low 2K's and not up on the torque curve. Add weight and they have to move to higher rpm's and fuel consumption. Wouldn't be surprised to read that the P400 MHEV that gave 16mpg drops to 13/14 mpg...

Case in point - 26mpg for Jack's travels, which with the lighter weight of the new Defender would probably be near 30mpg vs 16mpg for the P400 MHEV which would also benefit from a lighter vehicle and guessing 20mpg. That's + 50 to 60% for diesel, roughly apples to apples. Not insignificant. Now...

Not only would I have to pay $12K more for the P400 engine, I really get less than my 5.0L. 2019 Range Rover Sport's New High-Tech Inline-Six Struggles to Impress "......Objectively, the new engine brings no improvement in performance, despite gains of 55 ponies and 74 lb-ft of torque over the...

For me the most revealing aspect of the release were the 85 ECU's and $12K price adder for the P400 MHEV engine/powertrain. Why are they moving the entire product line upscale into very expensive territory? Look no further than the $12K adder for the P400 MHEV. Future products will be loaded...

One of the biggest disappointments for me is the cost adder of the P400 at $12K over the base 2.0L and no other options. That immediately puts you in the $70K-$80K range with just a few options. The Discovery diesel is +$2K. Theoretically that could have been a $53/54K Defender base model, not...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Argh. With 85 ECU's I either get a software application to support the new Defender or walk away because the dealer will be the only option for long term repair/maintenance. From McGovern's words it appears JLR is designing for a ever shrinking support timeline. This is feeling like the...

What do I need? The ability to be a workhorse at altitude. A 4cyl won't cut it as those are peak numbers are at high rpm. It's 2 liter! Now why is NA not getting the diesel?

Sure, for a 4cyl. The base model with 6 cyl jumps $12K.

Don't get me wrong. I like the new Defender, just not at $100K out of pocket.
