The build page is up. A quick build of the Defender X 110 .............................. $90K+. Then add in extended warranty and tax and you are over $100K. The depreciation on the new Defender is going to be ugly.

Agreed but for me and long term depreciation that is a big issue. Still, 85 is likely a near record.

A 85 ECU Supercomputer ............... on wheels. As a EE that is cool. As a EE that is a problem. This is not a vehicle for the long term. By that I mean 25+ years. How does a long term owner support that complexity? Dealers will smile.

    - In the NA market D5's are selling at 1/2 the Velar, a third of the D1/D2. That discussion is already done. There is a reason LR posted a huge loss that shocked the automotive market. Actual profit is not linear. You have to sell a minimum number of a model or the sunk cost result in a loss...

The reality is that someday I will need a replacement for the LR4, that the D5 fails the wife test while the new Defender incorporates the rear end of my Discovery I, profile of my LR4 with a LR3 front end (well except for those headlights). As always, pricing and will it make a good tow vehicle.

My initial reaction is that Land Rover missed the mark with the new Defender. It looks like a LR4 with larger tire openings and a sloping roof line. The amount of technology has increased, not decreased. There are too many gimmicks (exterior storage, side ladder). Ladders belong on the rear or...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Would like to see the fine details of the license. My concern is that Land Rover 'monetizes' your data by selling it to "3rd parties" which is anyone and everyone. In addition you now have a wifi/cell link to you vehicle. While Blackberry is working with them on security there are issues. If I...

So a reasonably equipped 110 is going to be $80K+. Not surprised. For me SOTA likely ends any possible consideration of the new Defender.

Wouldn't be surprised. The auto industry is in crisis and consolidation. Tata has clearly said more partnerships are needed (beyond BMW). Every manufacturer is talking about partnerships. In fact it might be a very opportune time for bespoke low volume suppliers to step up to the next level and...

I don't believe I have participated in the un-gentlemanly like behavior but there must be some really thin-skinned people in this world. The back-n-forth makes you better and also helps manufacturers be better. Without it we would all be driving 4WD Pinto's and the JD Power survey would be...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Reality Check ................... all manufacturers share many of the same suppliers. All assembly lines are mostly automated. Land Rover sources parts from the same supplier network. While there minor differences in "Initial Quality" the bottom line is that they all shared many of the previous...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

One aspect that is eating away at the attractiveness of newer vehicles is complexity. While reliability of the newer models has improved, they are also much more complex and in reality not field repairable. From that perspective the Defender and D1 are much more attractive for the off-road /...

Argh and LOL "...............Big chunky motor, that....hopefully if we can build them right ................" Which begs the question, you didn't before and JLR is seeing high warrant claim / failure rates?

How would you spec the new defender?

OK, I'll play. Assuming the new Defender meets the previous design profile I noted then: - 6cyl Diesel - 110 model - Air susp - HD package as I suspect that is optional - Cheapest tires you can get on 18" wheels as they are going to be swapped fairly quickly to very good A/T's (M/T's suck on...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

We will have to wait on the release to see the warranty. There is extended warranties but those are getting expensive. That said, I expect LR's reliability to improve but so will everyone else. Will it be maintainable by an owner? Well I expect all manufacturers to decline in that area as more...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

The back-and-forth is entertaining! As for the Defender we will know if it was a success in ............. 2 years. Why 2 years? Because there will be an initial surge that will then level off to the real desirability/demand/sustainability of a vehicle. It takes at least 2 years to build a...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Also add that historically there has always been a difference between Land Rover and Range Rover. Range Rover was the luxury sloping sexy model line. Land Rover was more utilitarian and functional, having nothing to do with luxury or any sloping design cues. The choice was clear cut. Defender...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

There is a short list of features, for us at least, that a Land Rover must exhibit and did in the past. After visiting all the competition we ended up back at LR for a LR4. - Command seating - Low waist line, ability for the driver/passenger arms to sit below the shoulder, unlike today's...

If you don't care about return customers you will be dead. The used market can be a significant factor in expanding your customer base. If you can get someone to drive your existing product they are more likely to visit the showroom. In addition it is common knowledge that LR dealers keep a good...
