    Roof Rack Design Considerations

While hauling some lumber last night I thought of another design consideration: If you use tubing, keeping it to 1” or smaller means most ratchet strap hooks can hook to your rails easily. If you haul lots of variable stuff, this can be important.

    Roof Rack Design Considerations

To be fair, most US sedans prior to the market transition also had “wallowing crap dynamics”. It might have even been a 1970s and 80s marketing goal. I remember people being excited when things would soak up bumps like a boat. ;)

Indoor dutch oven on a tripod

While I have suspended Dutch ovens on tripods, they are tippy. Probably better to get one of those cheap folding cooking grates and put a sheet metal pan on on it to hold the coals. That is what we always do, although DO cooking is becoming infrequent as more and more fire bans impact our...

    How do you manage trash?

When I camped out of a pickup frequently, I used a 5-gal bucket in the bed because it had a lid and wasn’t subject to spilling/tearing/blowing like a bag alone. Now, I do the trasharoo thing, but still put a bucket in it to hold it open and keep it less likely to rip or leak.

Where should the power infrastructure really go?

If you see any water crossing in your future you probably want to make sure those under bed boxes are really well sealed.

    2014 Torque Converter Problems?

I realize this probably gets much more traction in a JK forum, but I do not have a membership at this time. I'm having a strange transmission issue, it appears to be worsening, and I'm hoping to collect some opinions prior to full-on destruction! 2014 JKUR, 121,000 Miles, Stock Size but 20-30%...

Eco Temp L5 propane source, please enlighten me

For something in a 5lb size… maybe a battery warming blanket like they use up north? 12v and not too hot. I had a really interesting “discussion” with an OSHA inspector that found a heat trace tape wrapped around a couple of 20 lb tanks my guys were using to run a weed burning torch. It...

I'm stumped on this E-250 fails to start.

I don’t know this for an absolute fact, but based on my 05 F250 having a logic bus, I’m guessing your rig would too. Starting isn’t an entirely electro-mechanical circuit, there are enabling states that need to be met. Do you have access to a good scan tool? I wouldn’t even know where...

Eco Temp L5 propane source, please enlighten me

Is your tank showing a frost ring around the outside right before it stops working? I’m guessing it probably is. You asked for an explanation or solution. The problem isn’t likely to be easily or safely solved. Propane needs heat to become vapor, inside the tank, it takes heat from the...

Distribution of gear between vehicle and trailer

I like it! The hood already opens like a wedge tent. If you build an engine cover / sleeping platform…. Cold weather heat provided!

Distribution of gear between vehicle and trailer

Re-reading your thread, you might just reconsider the tent on truck question. Aerodynamics and COG issues have relatively little impact on a full size blazer, already a horribly inefficient and relatively stable shape compared to what is run on many trails. My bigger concern would be holes in...

Distribution of gear between vehicle and trailer

I built the tongue with 3 pinned positions, so it telescopes. Tight in on trails, about 6” from the pivot point. The tailgate cannot open at all and you can’t jackknife. Mid position is about 36” back, tailgate and tire carrier can open and trailer can jackknife to 90 degrees, this is the...

Distribution of gear between vehicle and trailer

I keep the fridge and kitchen box in the Jeep, pretty much everything else is on the trailer. I haven’t used it a whole lot yet, so that might still be evolving.

    Paint or other coating options

Are you in an apartment, or do you have a house / yard to work in? Depending on how much you’ll annoy neighbors or possibly ruin their cars, an HVLP gun and small compressor can be had pretty cheap and you “could” shoot your own. If you’re not trying to paint a show car, but a trail rig...

    4xe

Do you miss the space under the seat or the ability to fold flat? I have a lot of stuff under the seat and that actually caused some pause as I was thinking about how and where storage would work, I’m guessing a drawer that made the back level with the higher seat would solve that issue.

Roof mounted vs freestanding solar panels? Looking for recommendations

You are the only one who can answer your question there, and possibly only with experience. Extra batteries only allow more storage. They don’t increase the rate of power production or reduce the rate of consumption. You need to think about how long you will be parked, at what consumption...

Roof mounted vs freestanding solar panels? Looking for recommendations

Roof mounted work all the time you park appropriately… storable is one more thing to set up at camp and only work when camping. Your fridge and other stuff draw power all the time, your panels should produce all the time.

    Beatit G18 Pro not jumping?

Have you checked the voltage at the cable clamp outputs when you put it in “jump” mode, however that works on this particular unit?

Nice! I may still end up coming around soon, my JK might be re-homed in the next couple of years. The holdup right now is that both my daughter and I thought the JL was too soft, interior was not tactile enough, and seat was uncomfortable. I guess at some point we will just have to learn to...

    4xe

Congratulations! Did you go push in all the fuses and relays to ensure they are seated? That seems to be local lo I cooled off on the 4xe desire quite a bit after I calculated / estimated that it would cost somewhere between about 1.5x and 3x the cost of gas to run it on electric at my...
