I think you would be better served with an ammeter. These require istalling a simple shunt. Check an RV or marine hardware and electronics supplier for a 12V model.

At OX'10 I had a good look at Frenchie's (FrenchieXJ) Gobi Stealth rack that he uses with his Maggiolina Extreme. Of the racks I have seen for Jeeps (a fair number), the Gobi is the best designed and strongest. My $.02 worth.
