Help me fill my Overland Travel tool kit.

I have a mid sized tool bag for my Willys, nothing fancy. If it doesn't fit in the tool bag I generally don't take it. I try and limit myself on the volume of space for tools....this in turn helps me manage weight to a certain degree. I find it WAY too easy for most people when they have a...

Yup, I think you would spend just about the same on either motor to make the same power. At some point the even fire engine will probably be able to make more power. At that point though your probably talking race gas however.... If I can get 225hp out of my little 225 I will be way happy :)...

The odd-fire CAN be a really great engine. Like all retro stuff these days you just have to dig a little deeper for information, parts, etc. The 225 had a 50lb flywheel in manual applications. This makes for GREAT ultra low end stall resistance. I have seen my engine bounce the tach off zero...

Help me fill my Overland Travel tool kit.

Honestly, don't go overkill. Its FAR too easy to overdo it. Weight hurts....performance, weight balance, load capacity, storage space, etc. What vehicle are you driving and what are the common mechanical issues you could have to solve?

Supposedly there is a way to slightly mod the water passages to get even fire heads to work on an odd fire block. I wouldn't mind finding a 4.1 donor motor also....Then make it an odd fire just to make people scratch there heads....

700hp....that is practical right? All aluminum twin turbo buick V6 from TA performance..... In reality I think going to an aluminum intake will be a nice 1st step. The 'spare' engine is probably going to get a 4bbl intake and 4100 motorcraft carb. I have been looking into retrofitting the...

Surprisingly it's pretty snappy, and getting better with tuning. I was surprised. If your on gravel, dirt, or sand you can pitch the rear end around pretty easy. 3000lbs and about 2-3 times the power of the stock (L134 4cyl) engine is pretty fun. I can't wait till I build the spare motor a...

Desert Rigs: Ideas to help keep cool. Share

I vote alfresco..... Oh wait.....I almost died last time I did that :) I do think there is something to be said for a little bit of shade and open air flowing everywhere. One you acclimatize and are drinking enough fluids it's not too bad as long as you can keep the direct sun off your...

    48" vs. 60" Hi-Lift jack

If you're using a Hi Lift come-a-long to recover a vehicle periously close to falling off a cliff you've got bigger problems! Perhaps, but sometimes your better off going overkill on rigging safety, that is all I am saying. I guess I don't see what you mean by "taping" or "wiring" the chain...

Did a little more carb tuning tonight... I would say one lacking area on the autolite 2100 is the ability to adjust the accelerator pump linkage. There are 4 positions in the pump arm ( red circle ) AND 4 holes in the lever arm (green circle) on the throttle shaft. There is no cam as far as...

    48" vs. 60" Hi-Lift jack

The biggest problem in that picture, and the one we're illustrating in it, is the angle at which the strap-to-top clamp achieves. You'll notice how the strap appears to "move away" from the stanchion - that's not good and it's because the old red top clamps can only be used safely when in-line...

It sounds like the T18/D18 swap is going to happen. I am basically replacing my sm420 and shorty adapter. I was originally going to add some Tera 3.15 gears to the t-case but have decide to try and build an underdrive instead... http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1023228 This will...

    48" vs. 60" Hi-Lift jack

That picture is a good training tool for sure.... -Having the strap just over the foot on the high-lift is a BAD idea. If the vehicle happens to come forward and release tension the strap can pop off the foot. A pinned on connection at this point is a good idea if your going to use a highlift...

The old reseating a tire bead with lighter fluid trick. Bad idea?

I have had more than one tire fail to seat without the introduction of air at the proper time. More starting fluid could have provided a bigger 'pop' but I have always had really good luck with just a small shot and adding air right after. I have seen people try and introduce the air too...

    Lockers?

This one? http://www.kamdiffs.com/products-2/kam-difflock/ I would still like to see a selectable locker that was 'automatic' when locked, not spooled.

    Lockers?

Why can't someone make a selectable 'automatic' locker.....open or a ratchet type locker. That would be cool. In a front application I think the spool action of most selectable lockers gives something up to automatic locker that can ratchet and relieve some bind in the front diff. Sure, you...

The old reseating a tire bead with lighter fluid trick. Bad idea?

Sometimes you just have to use what you got...... Your talking about one of these correct? http://www.amazon.com/Ken-Tool-31433-Pneumatic-Bead-Expander/dp/B000J1Y31W Been there, done that, doesn't always work for me. Some tires like the old Swamper SX steel belted bias just where too stiff to...

    Winching VS. Pulling

I disagree with SOME of the pulling backwards problems mentioned. Don't write giving someone a quick tug while going backwards off. It all depends on the situation. In some situations the stuck vehicle is going to be STUCK and pulling HARD in reverse is going to be a bad idea. If your trying...

The old reseating a tire bead with lighter fluid trick. Bad idea?

I have always had it work best when I could introduce air right after the 'pop'. I wasn't trying to infer that you needed it for combustion, just timing... I start SMALL on the starter fluid. I don't think you need 'extra' to fully pop the bead on the rim....only enough to get it to grab with...
