1998 Tacoma Camper/Build Thread - Pics!

Been meaning to post some updates of what I got going on, finally getting around to it. Somewhat budget build, but it will be ongoing and lots of pics to come.

Picked up the truck about a month ago, cherry condition, steal of a deal. All stock aside from bigger tires, 178k mi, V6 4x4, locking rear diff. Here it is when I bought it.

Intent is to set it up as a do anything, go (most) anywhere rig. Build out the back and keep it stealth, not something that stands out to much.

Only major thing it needed was rear axle bearing and seals on one side, so took care of that myself first thing. Ran into a few hiccups but got it all done.

First thing was to find a canopy. Searched Craigslist patiently and scored one (matching! none the less) for $100. Not a perfect fit, but it was 99%, enough for me to make it work with a few tweaks. The issue was at the light at the top of the back of the cab, the canopy needed to be about 3/4" taller to clear it so it wouldn't touch. Came up with the plan to fab some rails to add on top of the bed rails. Worked well and solved the problem!

Here it is when I picked it up, hard to tell the fit isn't right from the pic.

Fab process, haven't figured out what I'm going to do about the little gap at the back ends of the rails. Open to suggestions.

Sealed up the tail gate as well, trying to keep out the rain as much as possible.

Few pics running some fire roads testing it out.

Came up with a plan for a sleeping platform and storage in the back. I wanted to still be able to utilize the bed space if I needed to, and not do anything to permanent. Only cost $100 in materials and took me a day to do this, happy to provide additional info for anyone looking to do the same thing!

I'll have more pics coming, working on hooking up lighting in the back right now. Just picked up a Yakima rack set up which I'll be installing in the coming weeks. Looking for an awning too for some outside covered area.

1998-2000 is the best front end :) wish mine had a locker... Bone stock and clean is by far the best place to start.

Was that she'll meant for another model truck? Strange that it fits, but doesn't fit.

Yeah not sure exactly what truck the shell was meant for. It was about a 1/2" narrow, and 3/4 short height wise but was able to make it work.

Nice rig, I have a red one a little more abused when I got it but Love the truck, what is the rear diff size and ratio? I llike the platform design. I picked up an older topper for an 88-90 I believe and it is a bit narrow, but fit its ok and even latches gotta love craigslist.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Good looking truck! I miss my first gen. Take a look-see at my website for awning mounts for Yakima (and Thule) racks. We will have awnings soon as well.

Good lucking truck, and it looks like you're setting it up about like I've got mine set up.

I gotta be honest though, I'm not crazy about the idea of plywood around the bed under the cap. It just doesn't seem like it would last or do a decent job keep water out (My cap leaks around the front corners, despite good camper tape and all, grrr...) Around here, there used to be lots of mines and occasionally you can find a big chunk of conveyor belt material. It's heavy duty rubber, about 1/2" thick with something like canvas in the middle (very strong, but flexible). I think something like that would be a good shim for you.

Anyway, great work. Can't wait to see where you take it. Are you running 265/75's?

Thanks for the advice, that not a bad idea actually. I agree with you, wood was not my first choice, just what made the most sense at the time and was easiest. It does leak slightly, nothing more than a regular cap would though. I didn't make it to permanent so that I can pull it all off and replace it in the future if the wood doesn't hold up. I figured it wouldn't last forever when I decided to go that route.

And for tires, yep 265/75's, they are holding up great, not to noisy.

Here's a few pics from the mountains this weekend, still getting face shots in March! Snowed over 6" while we were there, on top of 12" in the previous couple days.

I got some led's set up in the back as well, I'll post some detail shots this week of the installation when I get a chance.

Got all the parts for my Yakima rack and box set up as well which I'll get installed later this week and post up.

i see your prop rod holding up the door to your shell, find the model number on the struts and get replacements on Amazon. I have done that to my last two shells and boy is it worth it. I am thinking that the Redline kit for the hood will be my birthday present this year. Damn a prop rod:)

Truck is sweet and I am sure an Add a leaf is almost in order?
