2005-2006 Ford 6.0s?

by late 2005 most of the 6.0 diesel problems were figured out. I say most because there are still issues with the egr cooler, turbo, etc. they just arent as common on the later models. Most people that had problems with this engine either had a 2003 or early 2004, or modified them. head gaskets were an issue if the truck was modified because they weren't designed to hold much more boost than stock. If you were planning on buying one, i would get a 2006 and leave it stock. should last a long time, but i would buy an extended warranty. I had a 2004 f350 and went through 4 turbo's in 6 months. Ford finally updated the design and the last turbo they installed worked great. Mine was highly modified so i can't blame Ford, only myself. I now have a dodge, but mainly because i didn't need the dually any more and the dodge had the cummins... cant go wrong there. I think last months Diesel Power magazine had a "fix for all 6.0's" that explained in depth what issue's there were.

I have an 05 6.0L and have not had any issues with almost 40K miles on the clock. I hope I did not jynx myself.... I have an aftermarket intake and exhaust, which are good mods to have to keep the egt's down. I just recently installed an Edge programmer. I probably won't run the tunes very often probably just when hauling the camper. Having the monitor so that I can watch all the vital temps is the main reason I installed the Edge. If you read the forums you are going to question getting the 6.0L. People usually post and read the forums when they are having issues with their Ford......

Very true, most people aren't going to post up saying they have "no problems" Ford has always made a good solid truck, but the 6.0 has gotten a bad reputation and very little is probably "deserved". Intake and exhaust are good safe upgrades.

Did the 6.0 go into 2007 model year? Was 2006 the last year of the "last" body style?

07 was the last year of the 6.0.

jp0863 summed it up perfectly, 03's & 04's had the most problems. My 06 has been trouble free, except for a leaky fuel regulator. @ 52K now. I haven't modified the engine at all, just the exhaust.

Fluids & filters HAVE to be changed regularly on this engine. I do the oil every 5K, fuel filters every 10K.

Three months ago I touted the later 6.0's as great motors as I had zero problems well up to the 99k mile mark. Then my mind was changed.

I had 99,928 miles on my 06' on the morning of 5/20 when I left Cape Cod for Devon, Pa. I left at 3:30 AM with four horses going to a show for the weekend. I started to notice excessive smoke coming from the tailpipe at about the 100k mark (say Providence RI) of course just out of warranty and with horses it's not like one just pulls over and calls a tow truck unless the truck is totally dead. I limped down to Milford, CT's ford truck dealer. Having a bit of diesel experience that comes from owning a few CAT powered tractors I was somewhat familiar with the smoke and tick that indicates a bad injector.

I could type forever here. The long and the short of it is I had two bad injectors with 100121 miles on the Odo. The Ford dealer wouldn't warranty it, even though it had been going before the warranty expired i was stuck. At least when this happened to my CAT C15 I had a check engine light come on. So $1685 later I had my truck back, not to mention the $ I had to pay a competitor, who showed up with a Dodge (that ran very well I might add).

A close family member owns an 04' that has had a tremendous number of problems, EGR, turbo, EGR cooler, injectors, headgasket as well. Most of which occurred under warranty, but a few that didn't. If I find a late model pre 6.7 liter dodge cummins in my company's colors, I will probably buy it. I have three competitors that I am close with, two of whom are friends, that own Dodges and they have had zero problems with 100k-200k on the clock. There are pictures of my 06' on my website http://hollyhilltransport.com/home.html.

I need my trucks to run well not only because they pay the bills, but because of the precious nature of the cargo transported.

I hate to be so narrow minded, but for reliability, I would buy a Dodge (Cummins). (Nationwide dealer network through Freightliner as a Cummins dealer, many are 24 hour!).

Nothing seems to inspire such heated debate as the "which diesel is best question," and I certainly don't want to start an argument, but would like prospective owners to be well informed. Good luck with your purchase, whatever it may be-Charlie Venezia

Here is a very helpful web site, watch his videos.

There are a lot of opinions out there, this guy helps explain the reasons why so many people are either extremely enthusiastic about these engines or extremely hateful about them.

A lot of people prefer the predecessor 7.3L Navistar engine. This was discontinued early in the 2004 model year. They bring a bit of a premium in the used market.

Unfortunately, the 7.3s are all with leaf front ends.

OK so a little tangent: what is the material difference (I get the basics) on the difference between F250 -> F350?

Really nothing.... rear blocks, spring capacity. Why not leaf springs? The superduties ride well with a good quality spring & shock. I'm sure you don't plan on installing a giant lift..... The 05 & up coil suspension has a few weird design flaws in my opinion. they like to get the shakes.

From my LC world, there was a world of difference between the leaf sprung LC60 to the coil sprung LC80. Significant enough to almost make me a coil believer.
