Looks pretty sweet. Also looks perdy spendy for what it is. It does look like a super fun rig. If I didn't ride (and truly love) my singlespeed, I'd probably ride a 1x10 system like that.

thats pretty nice. I had a Specialized FS bike that I loved. I think I paid $1800 for it. Did I read right that that one is about $2000.00?

I've been interested in 1x9/10 set ups, but the more I think of it, the more it doesn't make much sense to me. If I were to go geared, I'd go full 3x9/10. I see no advantage going single up front, EXCEPT:

1- Cost (of front dérailleur, shifter/cable and rings)
2- Ease of switching back and forth between SS and geared)

On a 29er a 2 x 9 setup is about perfect. I ran a 22/34 up front with a 11/34 in back. Plenty of climbing gears and you don't spin out unless you are REALLY flying.

It really depends upon the type of terrain that you are riding.

I have a redline mono 9 and other then have to install a guide on the drive cog to keep the chain on it I love it. just put a micro ti fork to smooth out the full rigid fork and frame and its by far the best to ride some rode to trails ( seems to spin up like a road bike does not feel like Im pushing 3" tires).

Took my Jeckyle and the redline to Gooseberry ut and rode the 29 more then the cushy bike.

Some day I will will have a cushy 29

Sorry for bailing, I had a small bout with the flu. I was looking for a single speed when I stumbled on this little beauty. My interest in the 1x9 was that now I have a set of 41 year old knees.

I've got 45 year old knees and I ride a singlespeed.

Unfortunately, I'm only 39. :bike_rider:

Seriously, if you don't ride with some frequency, a singlespeed can be tough on a dude. Even if you do ride with frequency, sometimes knees have a hard time with the stresses of SS riding. I used to poo-poo the notion that singlespeeds were hard on knees. Then, I realized that of the 20-30 guys I ride singlespeeds with ranging in age from 25 to 50, at least a third of us nurse bum leg hinges. I think I might have another five years in my knees - after medical tune ups.

I have 42 y/o knees and do pretty well on the SS. I was a little concerned at first, but your body seems to adapt at what you offer it. For trails, I love the SS.

You mentioned mellow trail riding and just tooling around on it. Let me tell you that tooling around an an SS can get to be a real pain in just one gear. My kids are 7 and 3, and already I'm wishing for gears out on bike paths and neighborhood rides. Good excuse for a 2nd bike I guess... :)

I have a Redline Monocog 29er but have installed a suspension fork, discs, and a few other minor mods. If I had to do it over again that Specialized would be a great choice. I love the simplicity of the SS, but sometimes you need more than 1 gear to keep up. If you're okay with the price, I'd say it's a good choice. (I had a Spec Hardrock Comp Disc years ago and loved it, so I'm a little partial to the brand)

i would not get a high-end 29er for your first 29er. if you already know 29er is for you, then sure go for it! just make sure you test ride it first.

i am only 5-8 so maybe 29er just isn't for me, according to the numbers. but standover notwithstanding, the wheelbase was just too long for me.

and it's singlespeed or bust for me. every bike i own is singlespeed. :)
