Shoot...I am tired of waiting, we aren't getting any younger. We should just quit being persnickety about the platform, just buy something fresh[er], get in and go see the sites. Hell, my clapped out Taco is fine, just keep on fixing it as it breaks.

The perfect vehicle doesn't exist, and I don't want to spend my time building it. ;)
Ain't that truth. I do wish Toyota would offer a bit more basic Tacoma, mainly have the option to ditch the electric shift t-case or make it an upgrade option. Also I kinda wish they hadn't changed the bed rail dimensions and deviated not only from their previous dimensions but the industry in general. It's like the Dakota used to be, just a little bigger. It makes it harder to mount my WilderNest and it will look a little weird once done.

Yep, not getting any younger! :D Trying to convince myself not to care what the platform is. (too much of a gear head though!)

It would be nice if they offered a more basic version, but looking at it from a manufacturing standpoint, I can see why they don't .

If you're really hellbent on a manual t-case, it can be swapped in.

I am torn on the size of the current Tacoma, while I like the size of my 1st gen...the 2nd Gem seems like the Goldilocks size inbetween the mini-trucks and the fullsize. While I think the Wildernest looks better closed up than the Flip Pacs...I like the system of the Flip Pac better. A lot quicker to deploy and take down.

All-n-All...just want something to haul my gear and go sight seeing. What I have now works great, it is just getting worn out, can't trust it like I used to.

Is it just me or does the [old] cab body line not flow into the bed AT ALL?!?

Someone on another forum pointed out this is similar to what the current DCSB looks like with the interrupted body line. On the LB in the current models it flows better. And in some earlier "spy" shots of the 2016 being tested where there was an AC also seen the body line flowed onto the LB as it does on the current models.

Also be aware that this particular blue limited truck being shown around appears to have had some damage to the driver side rear panel on the bed. So in a few of the recent photos that area of the truck has been clumsily photoshopped (in one shot the wheel is over lapping the wheel well). This morning some other photos of the same truck showed up where you can clearly see that there was a bump and a scrape back there. Someone in marketing must have gotten drunk a bit earlier in the day than usual :smilies27

As a heads up apparently the Flip Pac is getting a bit of a revamp right now. I talked to Mario at AT and he indicated they were doing a redesign to improve manufacturability and reduce the really long lead times of the past few years. At this moment the improved version is expected in Feb/Mar with lead times back down into the 6-8 weeks range.

That is good news, are they redoing the tent material as well? No need for a rainfly, maybe??? Inquiring minds want to know! :D

I am torn on a FP or a FWC, which makes the decision for me...go with a FP...will get another Tacoma, FWC have to go with a Tundra.

I like to think Toyota is buying time with the gen 2.1 of the Tacoma to converge it with the Hilux back to the world platform. A guy can hope, right?

Honestly, a Hilux is about the only way Toyota will get me to buy a new vehicle...

Apologies for dragging off topic...

I don't know about the rain fly but that was the very first thing that popped into my mind. I know Mario talked about that like a year ago but told people not to wait for it. I suppose we will know in a few months, or perhaps someone can ask Mario what to expect.

A few years back I was looking at FWC but yeah the weight is just insane for a Tacoma. I really want to avoid the Tundra. I'm driving a 1992 4WD RCLB right now and so even a Tacoma is a bit bigger than I'm used to. I wasn't aware of the Flip Pacs until recently when I saw one in person. It definitely seems much more my style and keeps me in a Tacoma. Heck, with recovery gear, water, extra gas and a passenger it is already hard to keep a Tacoma with a Flip Pac below GVWR. And the Flip Pac creates a much larger living foot print when open than a FWC (assuming you use the bed as lounging space in foul weather).

Which does bring me back to topic - one big question I have about the 2016 is what will the payload be like. That is the one thing that might make me go for a 2016 over a 2015 - if the payload has significantly increased. I strongly suspect the answer is no, in which case it will be a 2015 for me simply so I'll have immediate access to aftermarket equipment and ten years of mod experience around on the web rather than having to be the guinea pig myself!

I know a FJC or 4Runner case can be swapped in, although there are a couple of issues potentially with tricking the ECU to lock the front axle. It's doable. I just wish it didn't require modifying my truck and voiding a warranty. Honestly it's not so much the electric shift, Toyota's not known to have nearly the electrical gremlins that other makers do, but the lack of neutral. Probably goes hand-in-hand with the move away from manual transmissions, but on cold mornings it's so handy to put the t-case in N and put the transmission in 5th gear and let the whole mess spin. With a load the engine warms up quicker and the friction warms up the gear lube so it's less like shifting through molasses. Also I think manufacturers remove neutral from vehicles that probably shouldn't be flat towed as a lowest common denominator move.

Well, here tis….hmmm, it indeed looks more like a mid-cycle refresh than an all new truck. I wouldn't say that I love it but I don't hate it either. Have to sit on these pictures for a while to decide for sure. So far, I think it looks better than the Colorado but I still prefer the 4Runner better.

Wow... that thing looks hideous! Dunno if it will grow on me... Looks like I'm keeping my 2010 until the gen 4 comes out...

All the FWC's on Tacomas...they are over-loaded, no matter what people say. Only reason I want a FWC is the hardtop and it holds heat better, I can live without all the built ins...already have all the camp gear I need. One thing that keeps me from buying a Flip Pac...I don't like the tent material they use. If I am going to spend that kind of money for a glorified tent, the material needs to be upgraded so it doesn't need a rainfly. Sure I can deal with the rainfly..but waiting and seeing what they come up with. The FP would be more versatile than the FWC, since you can still use the bed of the truck like if you had a regular topper on it. That and much lighter. For me the FP is in the lead over the FWC on my list of the things I need and want out of a truck camper. Just not quite there yet though.

I highly doubt the payload will be increased on the '16.

I've been wondering about that myself. The one advantage to the rain fly is that it gets wet, you take it off and pack away the main tent almost completely dry. Then you can shake out the rain fly and store or dry it separately. If the main tent were water proof and you didn't use the fly then you'd be packing away a wet tent when you closed the Flip Pac. Not sure if that is a good idea or not.

Alternatively I think for modest rain and sprinkles you can treat the main tent to be water repellant enough on its own. I'm thinking your typical desert showers kind of thing. For a NW soaker or a desert thunderstorm you'd need the fly for sure I suspect. I believe Dave of the incredible Flip Pac build sealed his main tent.

Of course if they make it water proof without a fly you could always add an additional fly to address my wet packing concern - so better to have it water proof than not.

I highly doubt the payload will be increased on the '16.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised myself. I see nothing to indicate the curb weight would be any lower and I doubt they will raise the GVWR either.

That not getting any younger comment cracks me up. You and I think a lot alike.

THAT picture above and this is how ALL Tacoma's should come. Manual tcase!...like the not for "US" Hilux is equipped. I suppose they could still offer the electric shift in the Limited model for the flitboys that don't know how to shift one of these and need buttons and dials like their video games they grew up with but it is safe to say us gearheads do not want buttons and dials!

I was looking at getting back into another Tacoma for overland exploration. My last Tacoma was a 2001 and I loved it. Since then I have owned three Sequoia's and they have all been wonderful.. I guess I will have to wait to see the 2016 Tacoma in person before making a final decision. I never thought I would say this but looks like I may be getting my first Chevy!

Right, and hopefully you also realize a brands biggest fans are also their toughest critics. I am a huge GM, Toyota, & Chrysler fan and also a tough critic of all of them.
