180Hp and 360lb ft is not enough grunt to call it a 2500 or 3500 van. If it can't tow 8000+lb relatively easily it isn't worth much. I would see value in adding the 2.8 to the 1500 lineup, but not the actual work line. Another bad move GM...

Those numbers are relatively close to that of a 4bt cummins and those have been pushing around loaded step vans for years.

While I agree I would not want the 2.8 Dmax for my personal vehicle I can see it being useful to fleet managers running loaded up service trucks.

I think the diesel engine for the GM Van will be a plus for the Conversion Van market for larger vans.
Not everyone needs to pull a large trailer or camper.
I drive a full size AWD GMC Conversion van with a 5.3 gas and get about 17 mpg average , have gotten 17.8, not overloaded and 2 people
I can see a small Diesel engine in these types of Vans with the hope of better gas MPG.

I know many a 90's trucks that had that kind of power. Including ¾ and 1 tons.
Not going to pull 10,000 pounds effortlessly up a mountain at 70MPH. But they will get around fine

I agree. The early TBI 454 engines where rated at 230 hp 385 torque I think, and that was the big engine. Plenty of smaller 350 engines put in heavy duty trucks as well.
