Ok looked a little closer, here’s some notes on the BIW shots. I think there’s a lot of good actually, based on some assumptions.

A - fuel pump access in-car, no dropping fuel tank on trail
B - if their CAD shot is accurate, they left the arches in front completely open, covered only by fender and trim
C - rear structure is just crash cans bolted on, pretty standard to make cars repairable after rear end collisions. Speaks well for rear armor options
D - front structure appears to be located high up, easier to see on side shot below. Could be designed specifically to allow lower facia replacement
E - likely wiring pass through for E-diff harness
F - looks like headliner provisions for ADAS like emergency braking, coward collision warning, advanced cruise control, etc

A - open fenders for oversized wheels/long travel
B - concerning structure where one would normally like approach angle/armor
C - open space for rear armor options
D - likely using subframes for suspensions, which opens up a lot of options for lifts (body lift)
E - they’re showing factory skid plates

That'll be to prevent over-riding in a collision with a smaller vehicle, otherwise the impact will be at the glasshouse in a side impact, the windscreen in a frontal impact, or the backseat in a rear impact.

Looking at their configuration build on Land Rover USA, base price is $49,900 for the 110. No diesel as of this moment for us, looks like just a 4 and 6 cylinder gas engines. 18" wheels are standard so maybe a shot at fitting 17" wheels for more rubber. Pretty exciting overall! Still not sure about that front end though, way too busy. They kept the rear so much cleaner.

As a long time Land Rover owner and fan that’s lusted for a Defender but never owned one, I like the new one. This is primarily because it solves the issue of “If I had to buy a new car, what would it be?” This has been troubling because there have been literally zero options, which is scary. I agree this is more a continuation of the Discovery lineage, but I think it does an even better job of it.

I’m disappointed there is no NA diesel option, though I can’t say I’m surprised by it. I wasn’t holding my breath until I saw it listed officially, but it’s possible it may roll out with the 130’s release. I’m not big on the 6 cylinder “hybrid” option, but if it’s bascially a powered alternator as Hammond states, it shouldn’t be intrusive and likely means it has a battery that can run a fridge for a week while parked.

I’d love to see a quality aftermarket company like AEV go after this thing hardcore. The design of the front fenders/wings looks like they will need to be cut for a front bumper, so it might be worth them producing a pair of fenders with a bit more of the classic Defender shape and a pair of JW Speaker round headlights.

I’m not sure why there is so much argument over the side mounted ladder and storage box, they are factory accessories which can be easily left off. It would be nice if there is some sort of factory “quick connect” mounts there that simplify fitment of other aftermarket stuff like rotopax, a fold down table, etc.

For all the guys still wanting a “true” Defender, keep in mind that the 25 year import ban is rolling, so there are still a ton of them out there that can be brought in each year. I think anyone expecting solid axles and body on frame construction with this edition was being unrealistic.
