I've been suffering from gall bladder problems for half a year. Finally got that sucker taken out a few weeks ago and I feel great! This is just my yearly head cold. I always get one on my birthday but I'm lucky that it's usually the only cold I get a year.
Today was hard for getting photos. I have been stuck in a truck training a new guy in some of the worst weather we have had this year. We just to Nampa Idaho to unload. It's next to a rail yard with some bright sodium vapor lights. I've been reading a little on the effect of stopping a lens way down in order to create a star like look to the lights. I had no tripod and only a 50MM prime but I tried a few shots with the camera sitting on a rail and setting the timer. The effects were so so and I'll post up something when I can actually upload the photos to a computer.

Hey Ryan, I'm looking forward to this evolving and seeing your photography improve and develope your own style over the next 365 days.
One thing to grab and throw in the bag should be one of those Joby Tripods. They're super small and light and could easily be carried in cab of your work truck without interfering with anything.
Coolest part about them is they're bendable and moldable to grab ahold of different things so you can try different shots and experiment.
Just a thought because I know you like to fool around with long exposures and HDR stuff

Finally got home. Man, what a week. I had a new guy I had to train yesterday and today. On top of that we have had some of the worst weather and worst road conditions I've seen in years.
We made a 22 hour straight run from Ogden Utah to Opal Wyoming to Nampa Idaho and back to Ogden.
I knew time would be short to grab anything but I promised myself I would get something...even if it sucked everyday. Not just a snapshot but something I put some thought into.
The propane plant we delivered to was in the train yard in Nampa. A few weeks ago I was reading on the effect stopping a lens way down would have on bright lights. I wanted to see if I could use it to some sort of artistic effect. This is what I came up with.

I left my house in a hurry and didn't take a tripod or any other gear. Just my camera and a 50MM lens. I had to set this on a rail and use the self timer. Obviously a lot of cropping was done to get rid of the foreground, since the camera was so close to the ground.

Today was an utter failure. 
I was so tired from the crazy day yesterday that I didn't think I would get anything accomplished. There has been this offramp on the freeway that I take every night and it has a really cool reflection of the stop light that I always see and always think it could possibly make a neat photo. So after getting off work, I decided to run up there. Of course since I just got out of my truck I still didn't have any way of supporting the camera. I think that shot above works very well for a street scene. I spent some time looking at it (before I read your explanation) and admired the reflection and the fog. It has kind of a lonely and eerie feeling to it.
I think what really makes the shot is the billboard--it contrasts nicely and adds a dimension that this shot needs. Funny as it sounds, for me, if the billboard was not there, the shot would be ho-hum.

I agree that you learned from the shot above. I might have tried to bump up the ISO to get some more out of it, but at least to stuck to your promise and went out in the cold, fog to get a shot.
It might be better if you post the settings so we can see what you're doing with your camera. I understand if its one of the shots with the iPhone, but it will tell us alot more about the shots

Day Four.
Christmas eve.
Today (ok it was three days ago, I've been busy) was a crazy day. I didn't think I was going to get a single photo out at all. At the last minute as we were leaving to head to the inlaws, my wife told me to grab the camera, they wanted a photo of the grandkids (ugh!)
While we were there, I looked around for something...anything to take a photo of. Nothing was catching my eye. Finally I set the camera down on the coffee table and noticed the gifts under the tree. It wasn't ideal but it was the best I could come up with under the demanding situations of the day.

Day 6 (Ok, I cheated for all of you pixel peepers who might check my exif data)
Christmas morning, my wonderful wife gave me some great gifts. A new SB-600 speedlight, A new 35MM 1.8 Nikon lens and a tiny little Gorrilapod. I set this exact shot up just to show off my new toys but couldn't make the flash work off camera. I tried everything and then realized I was doing it all wrong. In fact I started this thread here.
After I realized what I was doing wrong, I went back and took the shot tonight. Nothing artistic, just wanted to show off the new gear (taken with the new 35MM lens)

Since I figured out the off camera lighting I thought I would go experiment.
Nikon was nice enough to throw in the little base to hold a speedlight on a tripod. I set the tripod up under this tree facing up.
I took a bunch tonight but I liked this one. Not really sure why.

Actually I think that you are doing just fine. The shot of the presents is nice...I would have liked to have seen more tree and less presents...but that is just nit-picking.
The second shot of the tree/sunset is good practice for learning the gear. I think you like it because you were figuring out a few things and the light is pretty nice from the off-camera strobe.

I shot a nice panorama coming up through Willard tonight. 5 shots with the 28mp Leaf back. I will process it tomorrow...

I really like your second shot of the tree and the nice sunset, but would have liked to see more detail in the cityscape in the background.
Maybe a longer exposure to bring out the shadows and that would be a framer in my book. I'd go back and practice on that scene
