Wiffleball Batter
Already asked at T4R.org but this is a more off-road oriented forum so I thought I'd ask over here, too.
Ever since I got my '99 in July of this year, I've noticed a slight 'sag' in the rear suspension. It's not dramatic, but I notice it every time the truck is parked on a level surface. Needless to say, if it's loaded down with gear, it's even more pronounced.
I've already decided not to go for the ARB bumper (as cool as they are, I just can't justify the cost, as I don't really need it and would rather spend the money elsewhere) so there is no need for a lift kit (really, the 4runner is already so high my wife has trouble getting into it.)
But I find the rear sag annoying. My question is, would it make sense to swap in a set of OME 891 coils in the back to lift it up a bit and provide a firmer suspension for carrying gear? I can get a set of 891s for around $170 from Toyteclifts here in town, and I think I can install them myself with a little help. And would 891's be the appropriate springs to use (according to Toyteclifts, that's the "medium duty" spring) or should I consider a different one?
Next question would be: If I decide to go this route, will I need to put on different (i.e. longer) rear shocks?
And even if it's not neccessary to put on new shocks, I'm thinking it's advisable since I'm about 99% certain I'm still running on the 10 year old factory shocks.
So the question then is, should I pop for the OME shocks (another $170) or is there a less expensive alternative? It's been ages since I shopped for shock absorbers so I have no idea how expensive they are.
Regarding cost, my thought is that if I have to replace the part anyway, I might as well replace it with a better performing part than the factory one, but on the other hand, there's no sense in paying a lot of $$ for a capability I'll never use.
What I'm looking for is a firmer ride and a more level stance, but without raising the vehicle up any significant amount.
Any advice is appreciated!
