I would go with a 97-99 XJ, Non ABS. That will give you the H.O 4liter, pre COP ignition, and pre 0331 head(prone to cracks). A SOLID FRONT AXLE!!! Will also give you a Chrys 8.25 rear and a HP dana 30 front. 4 full doors, lots of room, Tons of aftermarket support. Lots of storage room in the back for passengers and gear. In addition, there are 5 million XJ's around the country for replacement parts.
I agree on every point but the "lots of room in the back for passengers" part. The XJ definitely feels wider than the 3rd gen 4Runner, but the back seats are tight on space. I would compare the seating space to that of a small car, like a Golf or Civic. A rear facing child seat requires the front seat to be moved so far forward no one over 5' tall can sit there anymore. I know this because 3yrs ago I moved from a 91 XJ (that I loved) to a 96 4Runner in order to gain passenger seating space to fit rear facing child seats in the back seat while retaining full leg room up front. Plus the extra cargo space the 4Runner has over the XJ with all the seat up.
Thank you, actually something that contributed to the thread.
