Don't think this is "abandoned". It might be an icecream place in the summer time, but looks neat too me. This is near Grissom air force base north east of Kokomo, In.

A shot of the old iron ore mine in Taconite Harbor, MN that closed in 1986. This is pretty much all that remains. When the mine closed, the company sold off the houses and other buildings. There are some streets still somewhat visible.

I grew up in Sherman, still have family there and visit a few times a year. Somehow we got permission from the attorney who owns it, all we did was ask.

Jealous of that still being up - demolition was completed on the Soo Line Ore Dock in Ashland, WI. What was a iconic landmark for over a century is nothing more than a memory and timber pilings. Sad to of seen it go.

We went through Ashland on our way back to Michigan. I'm glad I got to see it when we went through there back in 2007. The only thing left are the cement footings in the water.

With the exception of the top cap, the pilings that were sunk/driven into the lakebed are all Douglas Fir trees, most of them original old growth. Prior to demolition commencing, a core sample of some of the trees was taken to determine the structural stability, and because of the low oxygen content of the water coupled with the very cold tempatures of the lake, the core samples only showed minimal aging - estimated that the pilings were good for atleast another 200 years - and most of them had been sunk below the waterline for 100 years already. The top cap is actually just sitting on top of the pilings - it was never anchored to any of the pilings. The sheer weight of the ore dock kept it in place for over a century .
