About to take the plunge - 2001 Range Rover

Do you really use that in the backcountry to shoot birds?

I don't think there's any doubt that the MkIII, while not yet proven to have the longevity for a lifetime of fourwheel travels, is certainly the superior choice to the P38.
In so many ways the MkIII is simply the P38 concept executed properly. In a side by side comparison of features the MkIII offers little that the P38 can't boast.
But on the MKIII the ******** actually works.

Expand on this a bit. I'd like to read your thoughts on "why". What on the MKIII "actually works" that doesn't work on a P38? I don't drive either off road but my customers bring both models into our shop everyday so I'd like to hear your take on it.

Keep in mind that while the G4 is not the Camel Trophy, the MkIII at least wore Tangiers Orange and logged a few miles. The P38 did neither. That certainly adds a little magic.

No, I think that adds some slick marketing and pretty pictures of Orange Rovers with expensive toys on the roof but that's just my opinion.

If you're impressed by that, I'd have to assume you don't know much about shotguns.

Why would you assume that, Jack? Tell me about how you come to your quick and brilliant conclusions on what people know and what experiences they have by a simple question?

Considering Trek was essentially a dealer based exercise it hardly compares to camel trophy or even the G4, please try again.

That second pic looks better than some driveways I've seen around N GA.

I really like the MKIII. I've ridden shotgun in one on some decent trails. I was very surprised how stable it is considering the independent suspension.

I'd love to have one for a light duty, take me to fly fishing spots kind of truck.

I thought all of you soft-roaders claimed that you were hardcore because of the great distances you travel, not the great obstacles you clear?

The G4 aint no Camel Trophy, but all of those Tangiers Orange trucks logged more dirt miles in a single trip than the vast majority of the so called "overlanders" in this forum have. And they did it with a whole yard sale's worth of junk strapped to the roof which seems to be the very field test that this crowd should find relevant.

I'm used to the wannabe expedition one-life-live-it movement dismissing the Rubicon or Dusy Ershim because they're so insistent that they're not into rock-crawling, but now the dirt road marathons won't serve either? Just what is the litmus test?

I just wonder what kind of speeds I can attain going uphill on 676. Or if it can beat Gatsby's time of 7 minutes running the 311 up to the lookout. Given that nobody who knows me would ever throw me their keys I think its going to be a long while before I find out

Try to follow the path this discussion is taking Jack. It's all written word so you can even go back and reread if you need to (which apparently, you do). Here, I'll highlight the relevant points for you.

Keep in mind that while the G4 is not the Camel Trophy, the MkIII at least wore Tangiers Orange and logged a few miles. The P38 did neither. That certainly adds a little magic.

There was the Trek RR in '97.

Nobody here was denigrating what the trucks were being used for (well, other than you). The pictures were only aiming to compare how the MkII was used in Trek compared to MkIII in G4. There sure doesn't seem to be any substantial difference from which one could draw the conclusion the MkIII's were somehow more thoroughly tested than the MkII's.

As usual any point you were trying to make is lost because of your fervor to belittle others.
