I don't see it. Looks like a redesigned, rougher and tougher 4Runner to me.

Ok, maybe not a Montero, but the grill and headlights look awful Mitsubishi to me. The more I look at it, I can see the FJ influence in the windshield/roof.

I have never purchased a new car, owned quite a few used ones though. I have lusted after Tacos (1st generation) for quite some time and just can't get over the lack of depreciation- the used ones are almost as much as I could have bought a new one for in late 2004. So a couple of months ago I went and test drove an '09 TRD Taco. It was a nice truck but it did not inspire me, can't say why. I then toyed with trading the Trooper in as a clunker for a Taco, but I am too into recycling to see a perfectly good (and offroad worthy) car get crushed.

Anyway, this 4Runner is really working for me. I think it looks good and the Trail Edition has options that I look for; hopefully they hold their values like the Tacos do. However, one thing I can't seem to understand is why the third row seat is not an option for the Trail Editions. I probably won't use it much, but with a growing family I can't see spending $35k on a new car and needing a suburban just in case. I wrote Toyota an email, about all I can do.

I called my local dealer and am supposed to get a call as soon as the first one hits the lot.

Sorry to ramble, but I thought I would throw my $0.02 in about this being a great looking rig.

so what are they proving with that video? that the 4Runner can complete the Rubicon, but only with MASSIVE body damage?

??what massive body damage?
It looks like a rear mud flap, some rubbing on a fender... very minor stuff. Plus they drove it afterwards to AZ with no problems.

I think the fact that a stock vehicle of any kind that made it through the sections it did, is impressive, the fact that it is the new 4Runner is even more impressive to a 4Runner enthusiast like myself. Ive owned two 3rd gens and parents own a third gen, next one i buy will be one of these in about 6 years.

I watched the video again and there's definitely something going on with the lights. but it may be camo became it's a preproduction model. a stock jeep rubicon can't do the entire trail without taking a bypass or two... or three; I don't doubt the toyota took a few bypasses.

as for a pathfinder making it...

it was never marketed towards hardcore off roading, hence independent suspensions front and rear. are we really surprised it can't do the rubicon?

I'm a big fan of the new 4runner.

Why are you Toyota guys so obsessed with the manual tcase lever??

I guess when your vehicle is that reliable and capable you have to complain about something...

I like it. it's now a mini sequoa. I really like the flat roof. It will be an easy rig to put racks on. I hope they set up rack rails that go full length rather then just the rear half of the roof as on the past and current models.

I do have to say that whoever was driving was really ambitios in some spots. Toyota must have given them an unusual ok to risk damage to the truck.
