I am wanting to put a rtt on the roof of my double cab Tacoma.
I have tried to do some reserch on mounting. I am wanting to use 3 yakima Q towers. I have read about moving load and stationary load. I called Yakima to ask. The nice lady never heard of such. A guy over at ARB thinks it would work. I would have the tent open on the side so are bodies would be runnig laterly with the load bars. What yall's take on the idea. Has anybody tried this, and if so did it work or by the nights end litterly sleeping on the roof
Thanks

Not sure if you have read the: "Roof Tent Mounting Options" thread yet, but it's got lots of great information. With 3 mounting cross bars you should be fine.

Cheers ,

I have a DC --here is a pic or two of what i did. I used 3 Yakima racks and 80/20 1.5 struts to hold them up on my rack. It is very much over kill but it works quite well. I can even off road with it all attached and no problems. My tent weighs in at about 120-125 lbs. If you have any questions just lemme know.

Thanks for the replys. Ya'll have been very helpful. 3 Q towers its. Where at in Colorado do you live. The reason I asked is that the rtt mounting thread just sorta skimed the topic of mounting over the cab with an rack.

again thanks

we just mounted an ARB tent on our white taco (same taco on the overland journal's cover) using Thule's bed rails.

the taco is in Portland, OR right now, but when its back on monday i will post pics up for everyone to see how we mounted it.

Thanks for all the replies. Denver Taco Duh ( note to self read the screen name) My wife and I are trying are hardest to get out of Texas. We want to move to Fort Collins. I really like the tent over the bed option but i have a camper on it already, and the camper already has a rack and basket on it. We have a 2 year old daughter so the camper is nice for dry storage for are gear. I do not want to give up the rack becaue we cycle and canoe. That is why I was wanting to put it over the cab of my truck.
again thanks for the replys. Oh and if i didn't allready have the camper i would have bought your rack Will. It looks sweet.

Just curious, Where did you get the bar where you attache the yakima bars to? Do you have the part numbers?

It's called 15 series T-Slot structural framing from 80/20 Inc. part #1515-97. It's generally used in high tech machines. You can get it on Ebay for a good price. Also you can buy it retail at MSC or in Grainger catalogs. Also there are tons of different fittings that attach to this stuff...

Quite possible..

A Quad cab Tacoma can carry 165 lbs. when running. A roof tent - a small one would be best - can be mounted to a pair of Yakima or Thule load bars. I would avoid the towers that sit on the roof and clamp to the door frames.

This mounting scheme will be less fuel efficient than a tent mounted over the bed.
