I was just reading the user manuel on the iPad I got for my wife and noticed something interesting that I thought I would share.

iPad is unlocked, so you can choose your preferred carrier. Cellular data settings vary depending on the carrier. If you choose a carrier other than AT&T (U.S. only), contact them to set up an account and to obtain a compatible micro-SIM card.

I not sure how many carriers are using micro sims but I think in the near future most phones will switch just because it's smaller.

I'm wondering how responsive the GPS will be on the iPad 3G. I have an iPhone 3G and I haven't been especially impressed with its ability to pick up a GPS signal in trees and mountainous terrain (even when I'm getting a decent cell signal). I don't have a traditional GPS to compare it with, but I'm assuming that a "real" GPS unit would do better in these situations.

Also, do all the external GPS receiver units advertised for use with the iPhone and Touch require them to be jail-broken?

Not sure on this, but I just got my BU-359 Bluetooth GPS this week and I'll give it a try w/my wife's jailbroken iPhone...if it works it might be a good option since I can get a 3D signal with in inside the house, doesn't even have to be near a window.

I have used a re-radiating gps antena with my iPhone and I get an excellent signal. I have been told that it is not legal to retransmit a gps signal though so that's my disclaimer. Without the antenna I cant get a signal inside my vehicle at all.

Just 28 hours until the iPad with GPS and 3G modem goes on sale.
Prices are $629 for the model with 16 GB of storage, $729 (32 GB)
and $829 (64 GB). Anyone planning to take the plunge?

Certain Best Buy stores will carry the iPad 3G. Check this web page
to find the stores with an Apple Shop inside:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple/iPad/pcmcat208800050018.c?id=pcmcat208800050018

One reason to shop at Best Buy is their store credit card, which permits
you to pay off your balance over 18 months without interest charges.
Be sure to make a minimum payment each month to avoid the extra charges.

Boy it sure would be nice if some "expedition portal guinea pig" would run down and buy one, load all the GPS apps in it and go drive around for a couple hours and tell us what he thinks!

Oh, and could you get the report up by noon, I'm really curious!

I ordered one last night and its supposed to ship by May 7th at the latest. That's going to suck if there are some sitting down the street at best buy and I have to wait a week.

There is a nice looking topo app in he store that I want to try.

Got one!! So far I'm loving it! Actually typing this on it now Haven't tried any topo apps yet. I didn't see any good ones that were iPad friendly yet. I've used route buddy on the iphone with ok luck. They should have a good app once updated Had good luck with my street gps. Accuracy was good and the extra screen space made for nice layout options.

Only problem is my after market stereo won't even play music from it. Might be radio shopping.

I'd love to see what you think about motion x gps. Not the drive version, but just the regular. I use it on my iPhone all the time and find it to be very good. It has topos, street, etc.....

I've tried it before and liked it. Only problem I remember is it didn't store maps for offline use. They also haven't updated for the iPad. I use there driving gps app sometimes as well. It is going to be a great platform as the apps get caught up.
