Apple Tablet: iPad

Most people need a way to stand the iPad upright for viewing at a desk. This sort of holder also allows you to use the iPad as a digital photo frame when you're not using it for other tasks.

Apple sells the iPad Dock ($29) for this purpose. Several other companies offer similar stands, at similar prices.

Frankly, I'm offended by the idea that I need to spend an additional $30 to make the iPad stand up on my desk. Here are a few inexpensive alternatives.

The cheapest stand I've seen is a plastic business card holder. Office Depot sells one for less than a dollar. It's available in clear or black.

A slightly more expensive project is to add rubber nubs to a metal bookend.

A third approach is to use a wire book stand. The Fellowes wire study stand costs $5 with free shipping when ordered through Buy.com

The Medium Adjustable Easel from JoAnns ($9 delivered) offers the useful ability to set the viewing angle for the iPad.

What's your idea for an iPad stand?

There's hope that iPad owners will soon be able to access the Internet
through the iPhone's data service. You won't need to buy an iPad 3G,
the less expensive iPad WiFi will work fine through the iPhone.

Apple has released the beta version of version 4.0 of the iPhone operating
system. Among the new features of 4.0 is the ability to tether the iPhone
to a computer, giving the computer access to the Internet. AT&T has said
in the past that they were not opposed to tethering, but to date they have
not turned this feature on. Maybe now they will.

At present, it's possible to tether an iPad to a smartphone running Palm's
webOS (Palm Pre, Pixi, Pre Plus phones). Some people report it's possible
to tether via a Blackberry and an Android phone, but I've not seen a
legitimate way to do so.

I am sure this is buried in here but I am considering a 3G 32G vice 64G. I assume that will be plenty for Topo, books, and mainly browsing. I don't have a lot of videos. Any recommendations?

Ive seen wifi tethering programs avalible for Android. I have also sucessfuly tethered my jailbroken ipad over bluetooth to my Blackberry Tour using the jailbroken app ibluever, though it doesn't work perfectly on all apps.

New killer app.

Air Display: It extends the monitor/desktop on the MBP to the iPad. I can just leave mail extended to the ipad. Slick

Scott, you are dangerously close to getting a bit geeky. I'm jealous :)

Haven, thanks for the link to Jesse Rosten, he's brillant. I enjoyed going through his Vimeo collection. Loved the "Stella's Day" video.

With the help of international sales that started last week, Apple reported that iPad sales passed the 2 million mark in less than 60 days. USA retail outlets (Apple Stores and Best Buy) are perpetually sold out, and an order placed through Apple's web site still takes 2 weeks to fill.

One weak point is that the iPad is not truly a mobile computer. It's transportable, of course, but it's a pain to carry around. The iPad is best for sofa-surfing and transporting in a briefcase, not a mobile internet device that's ready at a moment's notice.

The new Dell Streak, with a 5 inch 480x800 screen and weighing only 8 ounces, seems closer to ideal as a computer that can fit in a pocket and be ready any time, anywhere. In addition to on-the-go Internet access, the Streak also can make phone calls. Streak is on sale in Europe now, and will reach USA in late Summer.

edit: here's a web page with photos of the iPad and Streak so you can see the difference in scale

There's a big electronics conference in Taipei this coming week. I think some credible challengers to the iPad will be displayed at the show. But most won't be available to the public until Fall. It's a credit to Apple's vision that the iPad's competitors will need more than six months to field a similar product. By Fall, maybe 4 or 5 million iPads will be sold!

Apple's new iPhone 4.0 will be introduced on June 7. There's some evidence that the new iPhone will have a four inch display with a whopping 960x640 pixels. That's eight times as many pixels as the current iPhone 3GS model, and enough room to run two current iPhone apps side by side. Delivery of the new iPhone is expected in late June or July.

any reliable rumors about the long awaited Verizon capable iphone?

My contract allows me a new phone from them in June...wouldn't mind an iphone.

The web heresay is: The chips are being manufactured in Taiwan...that's about 1-month old news. Given the early out penalty was just upped by AT&T I would have to assume the Verizon/iPhone deal is happening.

When? Don't know but would surmise 3rd or early 4th Q.

There have been rumors of an iPhone for Verizon for at least 18 months. We're hearing the rumors again as Apple prepares to announce the new iPhone next week.

One hint that Verizon may be receiving a version of the next iPhone is that AT&T Mobile has raised the early termination fee for current iPhone customers from $175 to $325, effective immediately.

There are lots of AT&T customers who feel that Verizon offers better service than AT&T where they live, or who have friends and relatives that use the Verizon network. These folks might want to get out of their AT&T contracts and switch to Verizon if and when Verizon offers the iPhone.

Steve Jobs appeared as a featured guest at the All Things Digital conference today. When asked if he thought the tablet computer (such as the iPad) would replace the PC, Jobs replied with an analogy.

Jobs said that in the early days of automobiles, the economy was largely agrarian, and customers who could afford a vehicle wanted to buy a work truck. As the economy evolved and vehicle prices came down, different types of vehicles were introduced to meet customer needs. Today, trucks are still sold, but they are just one type of motor vehicle.

In the same way, tablet computers won't replace PCs. iPads and other tablets offer a different type of computing experience that meets a particular set of customer needs.

I think this is a good answer to industry pundits and tech bloggers who excoriate the iPad because it can't do all the same things that a PC can do. Cars can't do everything trucks can do, either. There's a role for both.

In a partly related development, guidebook publisher Lonely Planet is offering their "1000 Ultimate Experiences" travel app (regularly $20) for free for the next couple of days while the All Things Digital conference is in session. The app contains travel highlights from around the world, as chosen by Lonely Planet editors. Here's the iTunes page
