Biggest tires on stock suspension for '01-'04 Taco DC?

Ok, please don't blast for me asking a question you probably get all the time, but I wasn't coming up with anything on the search under "biggest tires" or "stock height".

What is the tallest tire I can get under a stock height Taco ('01 - '04 DC models)? Right now on my '87 fj60 I have 31x10.5 BFGs and would like the same tire and same width with maybe another inch or two of height.

Thanks,
dave

the 265/75 R16 is a perfect "one up" tire size for the Tacoma.

A 235/85 R16 is also quite effective, and will also give you a nice increase in fuel economy due to the reduced rolling resistance.

Thanks, looks like thats about a 31.7" tire so just what I'm looking for.

Can the Taco stock spare location hold a spare tire that size?

You bet, like a glove :)

Well sure, but so could my fj60. And just like a glove I burnt the tire on my exhaust! Ok, so some idiot probably didn't tighten the spare all the way and it slid over a half inch to contact the pipe and melt the tread. I'd be more upset if I wasn't pretty confident I was the idiot.

What is the perfect size up if you have 15" rims? Am I pretty much stuck with either a 31x10.50 or 32x11.50? How do these compare to a 265/75 R16?

I've been running 235/85-16's on my '04 for about 2 months now. Haven't seen the promised increase in MPG though ;) Then again, I'm mostly doing short-distance city driving and running on crappy E10 fuel, so that probably accounts for my 15-18 mpg average.

You should be fine fitting a 265/75R16 or a 235/85R16 under there no problems (approx. 32" tires). With some minor modification (compliments of Ursidae69) you can fit a 255/85R16 under there with lots of room between the exhaust and the tire.

Cheers ,

Why did some of you choose 235/85's over 265/75's? Pro's/Con's?

I specifically wanted a taller/skinnier tire for clearance and because I didn't want the weight or rolling resistance of a fat tire. In reality the 235/85 isn't noticeably thinner than the 265/70 that it replaced.

If you get a larger spare consider installing a piece of heat shielding on the inside of the exhaust pipe, as it gets real close to the tire.

Quick thread hijack.

To those of you that went to 235/85s or 265/75s did you notice a loss in power with stock gearing? I drive an '02 DC TRD Taco, not sure about the gearing, and I hesitate to go bigger.

On my previous Rubicon when I went to 255s with an auto the gearing was absolutely unbearable on hilly roads and long trips. The 4sp auto had a high OD so I am curious to know if anything was noticable when going bigger on a Tacoma.

I had a 98 4Runner and I went from 265/65/17's to 265/70/17's (equivalent to 265/75/16) and I did notice a slight loss in power (very slight), but nothing significant. No difference when climbing hills. Only time I felt it was upon take off. When rolling, not a problem. You do get the 1-2MPG loss due to the larger tire, though.

Your gearing is 4.10, and yes, there was a significant loss of power. If you haven't done the deck plate mod yet you'll want to do it.
