Jim,

I appreciate your feedback, and I am sorry the forum has fallen short of your expectations. As the forum continues to grow, there will certainly be challenges and we will continue to work to improve things. Thanks for posting your adventure - if you would ever like a replacement sticker, let us know ;)

Thank you! I have tried to recognize both sides of this issue but I have been truly floored by the emails, calls and PMs with thoughts from folks on both sides of the discussion. I started out to share my thoughts and found that there are lots of folks who truly want to see the Portal stay healthy and successful but maybe felt they were alone or in danger of being ostracized if they voiced any unhappiness.

IMHO, I did find the series of photos showing you destroying the EXPO sticker bit by bit to be a little over the top.

Naa...it's just a sticker...very effective for getting his point across....and it's just a sticker.

Now stepping on it, dragging it through dog poo, and feeding it to a crocodile and taking pictures of that would be over the top.

It's just a sticker.

I never thought of that. But crocs are in short supply in Carrizo Plains!

Over the top. That is funny but I thank you for the compliment! Lots of folks have already quietly removed their Expo stickers and all the stickers were "destroyed" in the process. Pretty much nobody would know that they did it which truly made them silent protests. Peeling them off without destroying them is wasted effort if the point is to divest yourself of something that you don't believe in. :)

Anyhow, the Expo sticker is a symbol and the admittedly graphic removal of same was meant to be public, measured, peaceful, thoughtful AND symbolic. Documenting it with photos is what provokes the public discussion about what is awry with Expo. "Before" and "After" photos would be so gauche. :coffeedrink:

You might think differently if you were outside Arizona. It seems there is something is in the water in those parts that make critique a four letter word. For what it's worth, I rather enjoyed it for what it was.

You may (or may not) have noticed I have been keeping a lower profile lately. Not here as much but on all blogs, especially that stupid facebook, as I for one am in the middle of a very interesting situation. Apparetly the "Really..really" high ups in the section of government I work for want to punish me for something I posted on a blog. There was this thread between cops and fireman that got real ugly. The worst was 99% of the people would sign it annonymous. That really pisses me off. Well, late one night I could take that cops bashing the firemen anymore. (Being that I WAS a cop and and NOW a fireman may have had something to do with it). Anyhow, I ranted for hours, which turned into about three pages. I posted it, and, I signed my full name. No ********** here. So...I am reading up on first ammenedment rights in the workplace. Interesting stuff here. I did not libel anyone, slander anyone .. just gave a few opinions on a few things. I figure 20 years of service to my country has earned me that right. I can say what I want, when I want, period. If it gets deleted, fine. If it costs me 48 hours without pay, fine, if it costs me my job...again..fine. I'm kinda in a transitinal phase right now anyways in my mind., thinking about taking my forestry buisness to the next level and leaving this damn civil service crap for the young guys. It just so happens I am in the middle of two months off the fire department, so well see what happens when I go back. Dang...again...rant..blah blah...rant...sorry.

Not sure how this is connected to either topic in my thread but I do recognize you and have read a lot of your posts. Start a thread on your situation as I'd like to know how it turns out.

Your communications on this subject and replies have been thought provoking, well thought out, and respectful. You set a standard for integrity for this forum. Keep up your reports and your perspective; it provides us balance.

Take counsel in soemthing VADM Jame B. Stockdale, former POW awarded the CMH said, "Glib, cerebral, and detached people can get by in positions of authority until the pressure is on. But when the crunch develops, people cling to those they know they can trust - those that are not detached but involved... those that do not dodge unpleasantness, and who can mete out punishment and look their charges in the eye as they do it. In difficult situations, the leader with the heart comes into his own."

Jim, I'm glad you're staying. Always enjoy your photos and reports, hopefully you'll have more in the future. I agree the air is different now from when we all blipped over from another 4WD trip forum (which I still visit regularly).

I, for one, have many opinions on a variety of subjects but tend not to publicly announce them. I made that mistake once and it will not happen again. You can't "win" an argument in the vapors of the net. A face to face discussion is a totally different arena.

I stay, and post some and read. I'm still here for the trucks, trips, photos and friends. Some of my best friends are here and I have a mission to locate cool spots to visit when my wife and I finally decide to do the nomadic life for a while (it's coming). Hopefully, when we do become nomads, there will still be places left I can drive to....

If you're ever out this way, put a word out, we'll camp by a river eat some grub, hike, fish BS...

By golly, you hit the nail on the head! There must be something in the water (or lack of) here in AZ that makes us all wacko :sombrero: I'm glad that TEOTWAKI didn't take it as an insult, because it wasn't. I didn't catch where you are from. "Outside looking In"? That's pretty cool. Personally, I've found that forums take on a life of their own, and occasionally, you need to take a break from them. I've only been on here just over a year, so I don't know what it used to be like. So far, I'm very pleased.
