Many of the original personalities are conspicuously absent as of late...
Yep.
I lurked for a long time before joining the forum. There are lots of cool folks on here, but I feel that lately something has been lost. But I can't help but wonder if some of the problem is the lack of contribution from the pillars of this community, whose knowledge and polite concern is why some of us chose this as our internet home.
For lack of a better analogy... without the elders, the tribe cannot remember the old ways.
The increasing awareness, commercialization, and evolution of the Overlanding concept is the only way our grandchildren will be able to recreate as we do. Money, after all, makes the world go round. More people means more power to continue forward, but IMO, transplants from some other forums tend to bring some problems with them. As Connie so visually demonstrated in one of the threads that got ugly, there are bad apples everywhere (Great pic, BTW).
I have become increasingly concerned with the lack of a voice in government for those that enjoy the outdoors as we do. I believe that the few members who have come to this camp with their soapboxes to stand on and preach their moral superiority will eventually find other avenues. It is a small price to pay for the ability to preserve all this for the future. We sit and argue about differences pertaining to the best ways to preserve the trails, while our lack of action to perserve access is resulting in a disappearing hobby, way of life, whatever you want to call it.
Jim... I believe your voice is needed, as are those of many of the members who don't come around much any more. I am pleased that you have chosen not to be silent in your protest. I don't agree with you on all fronts, but I don't think I have to. This forum is a place for folks to share a common passion, whatever walks of life they come from. It is the diversity that makes any community interesting.
Sorry to be a latecomer to this thread... I just returned from a short trip of my own.
