"Is Subaru still planning to bring in their diesel?"

Sadly, no. Ditto for Honda and Toyota. All three have
small displacement diesels in their European models
that get terrific mpg. But they dropped the plan to import
them when diesel fuel prices shot up higher than
regular unleaded.

I was convinced that a new crossover Honda diesel was going to be our next new car, unfortunate news.

Ford has released details about its Scorpion V8 turbo diesel, which will replace the 6.4L Navistar diesel in 2011. No power numbers were released, but a diesel this size can be tuned to produce power just short of a Saturn 5 moon rocket.

Edit: Edmunds.com says the Scorpion will offer 400 horsepower and 725 pounds-feet of torque. For comparison, the 2009 Navistar Powerstroke delivers 350 hp and 650 lbs.-ft.

The 6.8L engine has several interesting design details. For example, the exhaust ports are on the inside of the "V" formed by the cylinder banks, rather than the outside like every other V8 and V6 engine I can think of. This allows exhaust from both cylinder banks to feed into a single turbo mounted in the valley of the "V."

Edit: The BMW N63 engine (4.4-liter turbo V-8 used in the X6 and 750i) also has its exhaust ports inside the "V" to reduce turbo lag.

This is good news for the folks who need to tow a 20,000 lb 5th wheel trailer. The rest of us need a smaller diesel, like the 4.4L V8 diesel Ford reportedly developed from an existing V6 diesel sold by Ford of Europe. The 4.4L diesel produces more torque than the 5.4L gas V8 used in so many Ford products, and gets better fuel mileage. But Ford canceled this project last year when diesel fuel prices were so high. GM had a similar 4.5L diesel V8 that was canceled for the same reason.

Chrysler announced a new diesel engine for the European version of the Dodge Caliber. The 2.2L four cylinder turbodiesel produces 165 hp and 236 ft-lb of torque. This new engine, paired with a 6 speed manual, is rated at 40 mpg in combined city/highway driving.

The new engine meets the Euro V emissions standard, which is not as tough as the EPA standards for diesel engines. However, VW has shown that it's possible to adapt a Euro V engine (the 2.0L diesel in the Jetta, and shortly, the Golf) to USA standards without resorting to diesel emissions fluid injection.

Chrysler's new diesel would be an easy fit in the Patriot (it's made on the same assembly line as the Caliber), and certainly could be made to fit in the Jeep Liberty/Dodge Nitro. The only question is, When?

EGR is only pulled from a single engine. It's the first step in scrubbing NOx emissions to meet 2010 EPA rules. The second step is the application of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (aka urea) in the exhaust stream, which will require periodic refills.

What Mercedes engineers do for fun:

A group of MBZ engineers took a modern 2.2L four cylinder turbodiesel from the current C-Class BlueEfficiency sedan, and installed it in a 1990 190D chassis. The results shows how far diesel technology has come in 20 years.

190D, original engine: 0-60 in 18 seconds, 32 mpg in Euro combined driving test
190D, BlueEfficiency engine: 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, 48 mpg combined, far lower emissions

Audi has officially announced the second vehicle with diesel engine in their 2010 lineup: the A3 TDI. The other is the Q7, Audi's large SUV.

The A3 will be available only as a four door hatchback. MSRP will start at $30,000 with DSG automatic trans.

The similar VW Sportwagen starts at $24,000 with manual, $26,000 with DSG. The Sportwagen is about 10 inches longer, providing extra space for cargo. I think the wheelbase of the A3 and Sportwagen are the same.

Is the A3 going to be FWD or AWD?? I drove a 6-spd A3 TDI in Germany it was fun :smiley_drive: 39 mpg at 100 mph on the Autobahn!!

Unfortunately and somewhat idiotically, Audi will only sell the FWD version of the A3 with the diesel, not the AWD. So still the only AWD diesels will be SUVs which get 20-30 mpg (instead of cars that get 30-45 mpg) and ridiculously overpowered US made pickups which could make do with 2-4 less cylinders and 60-65% the displacement and power.
Off the subject, let's hpe Ford's Scorpion diesel is reliable and gets at least the 25% better mileage Ford claims it will have.
