Unfortunately and somewhat idiotically, Audi will only sell the FWD version of the A3 with the diesel, not the AWD. So still the only AWD diesels will be SUVs which get 20-30 mpg (instead of cars that get 30-45 mpg) and ridiculously overpowered US made pickups which could make do with 2-4 less cylinders and 60-65% the displacement and power.
Off the subject, let's hpe Ford's Scorpion diesel is reliable and gets at least the 25% better mileage Ford claims it will have.

Well not always, when I had my F-350 is saw its max towing capacity almost every day. I used every bit of grunt that the 7.3 had...and loved every second of it...lol

More specifics about the 2010 VW Golf diesel are now available. Base price will be $21,990, which includes a sport suspension and upgraded audio system equipped with XM satellite radio.

The official EPA mpg numbers are available now, too. The Golf with 6 speed manual transmission is rated at 30 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, 34 combined. The diesel with DSG automatic gets 31 mpg city, 42 highway, 34 combined

The diesel combined mpg figure is fully 36% better than the Golf with 2.5L gasoline engine. And diesel fuel still costs less than regular unleaded in many parts of the country.

Autoblog Green has a link to a list of the 16 most fuel efficient European vehicles. Most are compact or subcompact sedans with 1.6L diesel engines. The Toyota Prius is in the middle of the pack. All get at least 56 mpg, even with diesel particulate filters.

Here's the link to the web site of Auto News, a German auto magazine:

How many of them would pass the crash testing, or emissions testing, in the US?

It kind of sucks when competing federal policy keeps us dependent on foreign oil.

Duramax: The new big block?

There were two custom vehicles at SEMA 2009 that employed
a twin turbo Duramax for 1/4 mile racing. Result: sub 11 seconds!

not sure if it has been posted...I read about 15 pages from this htread and didn't see it.

The 2010 Nissan Patrol will have a new diesel engine.

Renault’s new V6 dCi which was co-developed with Nissan. The new 3.0-litre engine has been designed for both transverse and longitudinal applications and can be adapted to pass Euro5 and California’s tough emission regulations. Rated at 245hp and 450Nm in its initial incarnation, in rear or four-wheel drive applications, the V6 dCi will deliver torque outputs of up to 550Nm.

Most of us Nissan Patrol fans are hoping it comes to the USA. We also are hoping they do something about this butt ugly body and retain the solid axle F&R.

Otherwise it will be the death of one of the greats 4wds ever built!

According to Autoblog, "Tom Baloga, vice president of engineering for BMW of North America, expressed confidence that a four-cylinder diesel will show up in a range of U.S.-bound models during the next decade."

I believe the years 2010 - 2019 are the "next decade." So we may have to wait a while before BMW 4 cylinder diesels show up in North America.

On the other hand, BMW already offers its small SUV with a 4 cylinder diesel (the X3 xDrive18d). In this application, the 2.0L turbodiesel produces 143HP and 258 lb-ft, and returns 38 mpg. The 2010 BMW 320d sedan, Efficient Dynamics Edition, has a version of the 2.0L diesel tuned for more HP, and produces 57.4 mpg.

BMW is working to create 4 cylinder diesels that have the performance of today's 6 cylinder gasoline models. In Europe, BMW and Mercedes now offer 4 cylinder diesels in their luxury sedans, alongside the 6 and 8 cylinder gasoline engines.

What role do you think common-rail technology has played in making diesel engines more popular and ubiquitous? Would you ascribe more impact to turbocharging or to common-rail to making the diesel engine increasingly attractive and acceptable?

Ford 4.4L V8 diesel for Land Rover

http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2009/1...7liter-power-stroke-v8-diesel-production.html

Mike Levine reports that Ford will build a 4.4L V8 diesel for Land Rover, starting in the summer of 2010. The engine will be built at Ford's Engine Plant 2 in Chihuahua, Mexico. This plant will build the 6.7L "Scorpion" V8 diesel, too. Ford intends to use the Scorpion engine to replace the 6.4L Navistar diesel in its medium trucks, starting in model year 2011. The diesel trucks will continue to use the Powerstroke name.

Ford originally planned to use the 4.4L V8 diesel in the F150 and maybe the Expedition SUV. But the high price of diesel fuel a year ago put this plan on hold. If the 4.4L will be built for Land Rover, it should be a simple matter to bring the 4.4L to USA at a later date.

At the recent LA Auto Show, VW showed a new concept vehicle called the Up! Lite. The Up! Lite is a small car, about the size of a 1990s Honda Civic Coupe.

vw-up-lite-diesel.jpg

The Up! Lite's engine is a diesel electric hybrid. VW says the engine should return 70 mpg in combined driving, with much lower emissions than a conventional diesel.

The diesel part of the motor is an 800 cc two cylinder engine. Essentially, it is one half of VW's current 1.6L turbodiesel. The electric motor produces 10K watts of power. Transmission is a 7 speed DSG unit. Together, this package can drive the vehicle to 60 in about 12 seconds, and to a top speed of about 100 mph.

The Up! Lite can run on electric power alone for low speed maneuvers. The electric motor also acts as the vehicle's starter and alternator, reducing the drag on the diesel engine.

Even with the large battery needed for the electric motor, the Up! Lite weighs less than 1600 lbs. The light weight and aerodynamic shape (Cd 0.237) help the Up! Lite achieve this level of performance.

It will be interesting to see if manufacturers adopt small diesels like this one for hybrid electric powerplants, or if direct injected turbo gas engines will continue to be favored.

Ford 6.7L diesel to cost the same as 6.4L

Pickuptrucks.com reports that Ford's new 6.7L V8 turbodiesel will cost
the same at the 6.4L diesel it replaces. Add $6,503 to your 2011 Superduty
order to substitute the new diesel for the standard 6.2L V8 gas engine.

This price includes the new 6-speed automatic transmission. In 2011,
the Superduty line will no longer be available with a manaul transmission,
according to Pickuptrucks.com sources.

The extra cost of the diesel is reflected in the resale value of the truck.

In Europe, Audi is now selling the A3 subcompact with the 1.6L TDI turbodiesel engine. Combined with regenerative braking and auto engine stop/start when the vehicle is at a standstill, the diminutive diesel is rated at 62 mpg (US) using the European combined mileage test. This figure was confirmed when a group of A3s drove from Norway to Italy last Fall, averaging 59 mpg (US).

Audi has not announced plans to import the A3 with 1.6L diesel to USA. If they decide to, I'd take an A3 TDI Sportswagon, please!

Between safety regulations and smog regulations, the US won't allow efficient vehicles to be produced, imported or sold.

Literally we are forcing ourselves to support people trying to kill us, through stupidity and Congress (but I repeat myself).

The US government statistics on average fuel prices for February show that ULSD diesel is about 10 cents more expensive than unleaded regular gasoline. The highest prices are in New England, where lots of buildings use fuel oil to heat buildings.

Autoblog Green tested an Audi A3 Avant TDI (station wagon to you and me).
http://green.autoblog.com/2009/05/21/review-2010-audi-a3-tdi-diesel-with-a-healthy-dash-of-sport/
The article is generally positive. They achieved 34 mpg in a mix of urban and high speed backroad driving, in a vehicle equipped with a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbodiesel and paddle shifting automatic transmission. Downside is the price, which is around $30K, or about $6K more than a VW Jetta wagon with diesel.

Audi and VW sell their SUVs (A7 and Touareg2) with a 3.0L turbo diesel, rated for almost 400 ft-lbs of torque. VW has refreshed the Touareg for 2011, reducing weight by 450 lbs and making the vehicle a little more aerodynamic. EPA estimated highway mpg jumps from 25 mpg in 2010 to 31 mpg in the new 2011 model.

In other diesel news, Dodge RAM pickups powered by the Cummins 6.7L diesel engine meet 2010 emissions standards without using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF, the urea solution that helps catalyze oxides of nitrogen). However, the cab and chassis RAM models do require DEF. The DEF is an extra expense, but the DEF-equipped models are expected to return better mpg. So the running expenses may be the same.

2011 will see changes in other HD pickups. Chevrolet will have a revised 6.6L diesel, and Ford will introduce its new 6.7 'Scorpion' diesel and new transmission. Both will use DEF to meet the ever-tightening emissions rules.

Mahindra and Mahindra's diesel pickup introduction has been pushed back AGAIN to mid-Spring. There are rumors that M&M is talking with Navistar about using the big-rig maker's facilities to assemble pickups from knock-down kits shipped from India. The reason to do so is the 25% "chicken tax" that would be imposed on imported vehicles. Mercedes ships the Sprinter to USA as a kit for this reason as well.
