Don't know how helpful this might be, but saw a full-size GM van with a manufacturer plate and diesel power (could tell by that funky exhaust tip) blasting up the Southfield (M-39) freeway this morning. Does GM offer diesel power in its full-size vans ?

Yes they DO. Dmax 15 pass with a 4x conversion would be pretty sweet.

Car and Driver published an interview with the CEO of MINI, in which he said a diesel engine for USA is likely a few years from now, when the next generation MINI is introduced.

The European MINI diesel has about 225 ft-lbs of torque. Back in 2008, Car and Driver recorded more than 40 mpg after two weeks of testing.

The 2013 model year is shaping up to be a battle between diesel powered medium size SUVs. Audi has decided to offer a V6 diesel in the USA version of the new Q5 SUV. The diesel version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee should arrive as a 2013 model. The BMW X5 XDrive 35D, VW Touareg and Mercedes ML320 Bluetec diesels are in showrooms today.
Each of these SUV models will offer about 400 ft lbs of torque and fuel economy around 25 mpg. The Grand Cherokee and Mercedes ML will be available with transfer cases that offer low range.

Be careful what you hoping on getting , a lot of these engines are available in EU vehicles already 3l v6 diesel in RR sport 255hp 600NM , and Range rover Vogue 330hp 700nm , ford RE the 330hp engine said would not offer in US as market would not want to pay a premium of $6000 to $8000 over gas equivlant .. They are also fitting particulate filters to a lot of diesels here , which can cost £3000 to replace in some cases . There is also litigation over miselling as some vehicles have been sold to markets where the regen cycles are impossible to achieve . But there are moves back to gas as the high cost of diesel (ahead of gas) is getting to the point that the extra diesel economy is no longer a factor . There is a little Kia that is less poluting than a prius as tech moves on , and its not a hybrid !
Audi has released specs for the its version of the next generation VW corporate V6 diesel. The new 3.0L V6 has twin turbos and produces 480 ft lb of torque. Fuel economy as measured by British standards is 44 mpg (imperial gallons) in combined driving. That's about 35 mpg in US gallons. The twin turbo diesel will be used in Audi's large sedans, and in the Q7 SUV.
The new twin turbo engine will be available in Europe this Spring. No announcement was made about importing to USA.

Here's an article that tries to make the point that gasoline engined vehicles using modern technology can provide fuel economy and performance as good as diesels do. The example is the new BMW 328i, which uses a 2.0L turbo gas engine and 8 speed transmission, produces acceleration and fuel economy similar to last year's 335d sedan with the 3.0 straight 6 twin turbo diesel and 6 speed trans.
The article doesn't say that a newer diesel design, such as BMW's award-winning 2.0L twin turbo diesel, would probably post numbers better than 328i does. Both gas and diesel technology is advancing quickly, so a design that's a few years old is bound to be less efficient, less clean, and less powerful.

Was just driving past the Dodge dealer and saw a Fiat Ducato leaving. Looks a bit smaller that a Sprinter, more like a regular old full size van. I suppose they come in a bunch of different lengths and heights like the Sprinter.
BMW is showing an M5 sedan with a new diesel engine. It's the 3 liter straight six diesel, updated with three turbos. Result: 545 ft-lb of torque at 2000 rpm, 0-60 in less than 5 seconds, and still gets 37 mpg (US gallons) in the European combined fuel economy test.
The 2012 BMW M550d xDrive sedan is unlikely to appear in North America anytime soon.

VW Cross Coupe concept
Like most manufacturers, VW is experimenting with electric hybrid vehicles. Unlike most, VW has diesel electric technology. The Cross Coupe concept car is a rolling testbed for this approach.

The Cross Coupe is a small SUV that is a little larger than a Golf, and smaller than a Tiguan. It has a 2.0L diesel engine, an updated version of the corporate 2 liter diesel found in several VW and Audi models today. Linked to the drivetrain are two electric motors, one driving the front wheels, and one driving the rear.
Three motors gives several options to the driver for motive power
-- diesel only
-- diesel and front drive electric
-- diesel and both electric motors
-- electric rear drive only
-- electric front and rear
This drive train is very flexible. When diesel and both electric motors are employed, more than 500 ft lb of torque are available. In pure electric mode, the Cross Coupe can travel about 30 miles. Operating in its most fuel efficient hybrid mode, the Cross Coupe consumes 1.8L of diesel per 100 km, or more than 130 mpg (US gallons)!
When VW showed the Cross Coupe last fall, a gasoline-electric hybrid drive train was employed. That combination was rated at 2.2L per 100 km, or 107 mpg (US gallons). So switching to the diesel engine improved fuel economy by more than 20%.
I'm interested in the way the Cross Coupe provides all wheel drive through the electric motor in the rear. This approach is called "through the road" all wheel drive because there is no drive shaft from transmission to the rear wheels. The Cross Coupe does have axle shafts in the rear because there is only one electric motor back there. It would be possible to have a smaller motor at each wheel, eliminating the axle shafts. A computer keeps the two wheels rotating at the same speed, and rotating with the front wheels.

The M550xd I'd buy in a heartbeat.
So far nobody has offered an AWD diesel passenger car in the US.
